GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Soccer was back in action with a matchup against Grace Christian for their first home match of the year. It was a historical night for the Golden Eagles as they scored eight, yes eight goals! Their most since 2011 as six different players scored and an own goal from the Tigers.
Alaina Kregel scored a game high two goals, her first two of the year as the Golden Eagles dominated all game. Outshooting Grace Christian 41-1 for the match. Cornerstone moves to 2-0 on the year as they remain at home as they host Saint Francis (Ind.) on Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 8 Grace Christian – 0
First Half:
- Cornerstone had the first opportunity in the second minute of the match as Gracie Gortmaker's shot sailed high over the goal.
- Not even a minute later, a pass from Gracie Gortmaker found the foot of Alaina Kregel as her shot found the back of the net for the first goal of the game. The Golden Eagles now lead 1-0.
- In the sixth minute after a Grace Christian foul, Gracie Gortmaker fires a shot right outside the box into the top left corner of the net for a goal to make it 2-0 Cornerstone.
- The Golden Eagles continued to hold possession of the ball as a shot from Brooke Harmsen in the 17th minute sailed high.
- Cornerstone added another goal in the 27th minutes as a pass from Myra Hunt from the head of a Grace Christian defender and into the goal for an own goal. Cornerstone leads 3-0.
- The possession of the ball continued to favor the Golden Eagles as corner kick resulted in a save for the Tigers on the 36th minute.
- Grace Christian had their first opportunity of the match in the 42nd minute after a Cornerstone foul gave them a free shot outside the box and it sailed high over the goal.
- Cornerstone heads into halftime with a 3-0 lead over Grace Christian. The Golden Eagles have 22 shots for the match compared to the Tiger's one.
Second Half:
- Cornerstone came out aggressive as 22 seconds into the second half, the shot from Tori Woodwyk was saved by the Grace Christian goalie.
- The Golden Eagles had a great opportunity in the 52nd minute off a corner kick. The pass from Gracie Gortmaker found the head of Emily Ake as her header sailed just high over the goal.
- Alaina Kregel scored her second goal of the game in the 56th minute off the pass of Ally Merrihew to extend the Golden Eagle lead 4-0.
- Two minutes later, Emily Ake finds the back of the net off the pass of Gracie Gortmaker to make it 5-0.
- After three straight corner kick opportunities, it was third times the charm for the Golden Eagles as a header from Kaitlynn Sal found the back of the net off the corner from Gracie Gortmaker to make it 6-0 in the 61st minute.
- The Golden Eagles added another as a strike from Jada VanNoord found the top right corner of the goal to make it 7-0 in the 64th minute.
- Primary defender Jada VanTol got into the action as her long shot on goal found the back of the net to make it 8-0 Cornerstone in the 76th minute.
- The Golden Eagles score their most goals since 2011 as they go on to win 8-0 over Grace Christian.
By the Numbers:
