Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took on Saint Francis in their second home match of the season. It was a well fought match from both sides as they finished in a 1-1 draw.
Gracie Gortmaker scored once again for her third goal of the season.
Morgan Scholten also made seven crucial saves throughout the game to keep Cornerstone level. Cornerstone moves to 2-0-1 on the season as they head on the road to face Trinity Christian on Tuesday, September 3 for a 5 p.m. match.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Saint Francis 1
First Half
- Cornerstone fires out of the gate with a goal in the second minute by Gracie Gortmaker to take the early 1-0 lead.
- Saint Francis looks to respond with heavy pressure after they conceded in the first 10 minutes.
- Morgan Scholten made the first save of the game after the Cougars forced her to come out of goal quickly in the 12th minute.
- Both teams looked to fight for possession halfway through the first half.
- Ally Merrihew made a huge tackle in a one-on-one situation in the 30th minute.
- Saint Francis picked up the first yellow card of the game by Holly Thomas in the 35th minute.
- The Golden Eagles lead the Cougars at half 1-0 and also lead in shots seven to four.
Second Half
- The Golden Eagles controlled the first 10 minutes of the half that all stemmed from a strong defensive effort.
- Morgan Scholten made a crucial save after she gave the ball away in the 56th minute.
- Haleigh Wesley scored for the Cougars in the 58th minute to bring the game back level at 1-1.
- Saint Francis's Courtney Tobin nearly scored with a shot that came off the crossbar only a couple minutes after equalizing.
- Gracie Gortmaker drove down the field to draw a foul just outside the box that led to a Alaina Kregel shot that nearly ended up in the back of the net but was saved by the Cougars in the 85th minute.
- Both teams battled down the stretch but the match ends in a 1-1 draw.
