Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball took on UNOH at home and struggled to shoot from behind the arc as they were defeated 87-60. Cornerstone shot 31% from the field and a woeful 10.3% from behind the three-point line in their matchup with the Racers.
Mackenzie Goodwin posted 14 points in the game as she led the Golden Eagles. The Ladies next test will come against local rival Aquinas on the road on Wednesday, January 22 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 60 UNOH – 87
- First Quarter
- The first bucket of the game came thanks to Mackenzie Goodwin off a strong drive to the basket.
- The Racers responded right away as they went on a 18-0 run to start the first quarter off strong with four minutes left to play.
- Emma Costen looked to get Cornerstone back into the contest as she knocked down two free throws which made the game 18-4.
- Jaylee Long began to heat up and found two buckets back-to-back but the Golden Eagles still trailed 21-10 with two minutes left to play in the first quarter.
- The Racers biggest threat Alysia Lawson closed out the quarter with 12 points and secured UNOH a 16-point advantage at the first quarter buzzer.
- Second Quarter
- Mackenzie Goodwin kicked off the scoring in the second quarter with a bucket and the foul to give Cornerstone some much needed momentum.
- UNOH continued to shine as they went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 21 points with seven minutes left to play in the second quarter.
- Jaxi Long and Olivia Kubik got into a rhythm, and both found multiple buckets down the stretch, yet Cornerstone trailed 40-23 with three minutes left on the clock.
- Cornerstone found some momentum late in the first half with a 9-0 run thanks to stellar free throw shooting.
- The Golden Eagles found themselves only down 11 points at the halftime buzzer despite shooting 0-16 in the first half from behind the arc.
- Third Quarter
- The third quarter started well for the Golden Eagles as Mackenzie Goodwin found back-to-back buckets.
- UNOH went on another strong run in the game this time for 11 points that extended their lead to 20 points with four minutes left in the quarter.
- The Golden Eagles finally knocked down their first three pointer of the game with three minutes left in the third quarter thanks to Jaxi Long.
- Jaxi Long continued to lead Cornerstone with two more buckets on the next two possessions for the Golden Eagles.
- Julie Ashbaugh created off a scramble in the paint to get in on the scoring, yet Cornerstone trailed 59-46 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
- The Racers drained a deep three to close out the quarter and take all the momentum from the Golden Eagles.
- Fourth Quarter
- Laura Innerebner scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to cut the UNOH lead to 14 points.
- Mackenzie Goodwin added a couple more buckets for the Golden Eagles, yet they still trailed big with only five minutes left to play in the fourth quarter.
- Olivia Kubik tallied the second three pointer of the day for the Golden Eagles in a 5-0 run with the score at 73-55 with three minutes left to play.
- Abby Hall knocked down a three pointer late for Cornerstone, but it was all too late as the Golden Eagles were defeated 87-60.
