Kubik and Long combine for 48 points as Cornerstone falls to Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Basketball took a short trip across town to take on rival Aquinas where they could not find a rhythm late and fell 78-76. Cornerstone had a chance at the buzzer but could not convert to tie the game. Olivia Kubik led the way for the Golden Eagles with 26 points as Jaxi Long chipped in 22 points of her own. The Ladies next test comes as they host UM-Dearborn on Saturday, January 25th at 1:00 p.m. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 76 Aquinas – 78
  • First Quarter
    • The first quarter started quickly for the Golden Eagles as Olivia Kubik knocked down a triple and Mackenzie Goodwin found an easy bucket to take a 5-0 early lead. 
    • The Saints answered right back with their own 5-0 run to tie the game with eight minutes left to play in the first quarter. 
    • Aquinas continued their hot shooting to start out the contest as they took a 13-7 lead with six minutes left on the clock.
    • Olivia Kubik knocked down her second three pointer of the first quarter to cut into the Aquinas lead, but the Golden Eagles still trailed. 
    • The Saints shot 5-6 from three at the halfway mark of the first quarter and held a 22-14 lead. 
    • Emma Costen and Jaxi Long both found much needed three-point buckets for the Golden Eagles late in the first quarter as they only trailed 24-22 with one minute left to play. 
    • Jaxi Long closed out the quarter with a smooth jumper as Cornerstone only trailed by 2 points. 
  • Second Quarter
    • Olivia Kubik kicked off the second quarter with a bucket and the foul to give Cornerstone a 29-28 lead. 
    • Laura Innerebner and Mackenzie Goodwin found strong buckets in the paint to give the Golden Eagles a 33-30 lead with seven minutes left on the clock. 
    • Jaxi Long knocked down a big three pointer to extend Cornerstones lead to 36-32 with four minutes left to play in the half.
    • Aquinas continued to hang around in this game as they only trailed by one point with one minute on the clock. 
    • Olivia Kubik drained a deep three pointer to close out the half with the score at 40-40.
  • Third Quarter
    • The third quarter started quickly for the Saints as they went on a 6-0 run to lead 46-40 after three minutes into the second half. 
    • Olivia Kubik kicked off the scoring for the Golden Eagles with an acrobatic finish at the rim to make it 46-42. 
    • Aquinas found some separation off back-to-back buckets to take a 53-43 lead with six minutes left to play in the third quarter. 
    • Jaxi Long and Julie Ashbaugh knocked down clutch buckets to keep Cornerstone in the game as they trailed 56-50 with two minutes left to play. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin found some momentum at the free throw line as she made a pair to cut the Aquinas lead to 5 points. 
    • Jaylee Long and Olivia Kubik both knocked down two free throws late in the quarter, yet they trailed 62-58. 
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Olivia Kubik continued her huge game with her own 5-0 run to start the third quarter as she tallied her 26th point.
    • Jaxi Long decided to go on her own 5-0 run as she gave Cornerstone a 70-69 lead with six minutes left to play. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin found back-to-back buckets for the Golden Eagles which made the score 74-71 with four minutes left on the clock. 
    • Laura Innerebner put together a strong post move to extend the Cornerstone lead to 76-73 with three minutes to play. 
    • The Saints found buckets on their next two possessions to take a 78-76 lead with only two minutes left in the game. 
    • Cornerstone came up empty in the final two minutes when it mattered most and fell 78-76.
By the Numbers 
19 – Aquinas led the Golden Eagles in second chance points 19 to 7. 
7 – Cornerstone and Aquinas both saw their benches chip in seven points in the game. 
26 – Olivia Kubik finished the game with a season high 26 points for the Golden Eagles.

Cornerstone will return home for their next game against UM-Dearborn on Saturday, January 25th for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
