Men's Volleyball sweeps Calvin to open 2025 campaign

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Volleyball opened their season against fellow Grand Rapids school, Calvin University and came away with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23) sweep. The Golden Eagles controlled each set early and often and never looked back after maintaining a solid lead over the Knights. Forcing 14 attack errors, Calvin hit .183 for the match compared to the Golden Eagles .384. The Galanes brothers, David Galanes and Andrew Galanes led the way with nine kills each in the victory. Men's Volleyball will now hit the road to take on #4 Georgetown for an early season test on Thursday, January 30.
 
Game Recap – #13 Cornerstone – 3 Calvin – 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Calvin - 16
  • The first kill of the 2025 season for the Golden Eagles belonged to David Galanes with a solid back row attack.
  • It continued to be all Cornerstone early in the first set as four straight Patrick Voloch service aces forced Calvin into a timeout as they lead 7-2.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to extend their lead as four straight attack errors from the Knights made it 13-3.
  • David Galanes, Andrew Galanes, and Joshua Beaumont all recorded kills as Cornerstone leads late 18-7 in the first set.
  • Andrew Galanes puts the Golden Eagles two points away from their first set victory of the 2025 season.
  • Joshua Beaumont puts the final touch on the first set with a kill to give the Golden Eagles a first set victory 25-16.
 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Calvin - 20
  • Calvin opened the second set on a 4-2 run thanks to a couple kills and a block.
  • The Golden Eagles started to find their momentum in the second set as back-to-back kills from Joshua Beaumont gave Cornerstone a 7-5 lead.
  • Patrick Voloch and Ernest Broaster added a pair of service aces in this Golden Eagle run as they lead the Knights 13-8.
  • Calvin continued to stick around in the second set as back-to-back points made it an 18-15 Golden Eagle lead late.
  • Calvin was forced to call a timeout as back-to-back errors and a kill from Ernest Broaster made it a 21-15 Cornerstone lead late.
  • Thanks to back-to-back errors from Calvin, Cornerstone won the second set 25-20 as they are just one set away from a first match sweep.
 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Calvin - 23
  • The Golden Eagles opened the third set on a 3-1 run thanks to a service ace from Patrick Voloch and a solo block from David Galanes.
  • The third set continued to remain close early as back-to-back kills from Joshua Beaumont made it a 9-6 Golden Eagle advantage.
  • Kills from Ernest Broaster and Andrew Galanes continued to help the Golden Eagles maintain the lead, 16-12.
  • Patrick Voloch and Hubert Sliwinski found some easy kills as they are five points away from a three-set sweep of Calvin.
  • Calvin has used a late 5-1 run on Cornerstone to cut their lead to one, 21-20 late in the third set.
  • Cornerstone fended off the late Calvin run thanks to Ernest Broaster's third set final point kill. The Golden Eagles win set three 25-23 and sweep the match 3-0.

25/6 – Patrick Voloch led the Golden Eagles with 25 assists as well as six service aces
9 – David Galanes and Andrew Galanes led the Golden Eagles with nine kills each
