Upset in Kentucky! Men's Volleyball takes down reigning National Champs

 GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Men's Volleyball had a great early season opportunity to face off against the reigning national champions in #4 Georgetown and came away with a 3-1 upset victory. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two powerhouse teams as the veteran group of Golden Eagles found a way down the stretch when it mattered most. Go to man Ernest Broaster led the way with 15 kills, three aces, and four blocks as Patrick Voloch dished out 43 assists in the win. It doesn't get easy yet as Cornerstone will take on #12 Reinhardt and #14 Campbellsville on Saturday, February 1.
 
Game Recap – #13 Cornerstone – 3 #4 Georgetown – 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19)
 
First Set: Georgetown – 25 Cornerstone – 20
  • The first set opened closed as both teams went back-and-forth before Andrew Galanes kill made it a 3-2 Golden Eagle advantage.
  • David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont would highlight a Cornerstone 4-1 run that saw the Golden Eagles extend their lead 9-7 early in the first set.
  • A quick 4-0 run answer by Georgetown helped them regain the lead, 11-9.
  • Another big Georgetown run forced the Golden Eagles into a timeout to regroup as they find themselves down 17-12.
  • The Golden Eagles stuck around late as a kill from Ernest Broaster hoped to gain the momentum back on Cornerstones side as they are down 21-17.
  • The National Champs take set one 25-20 thanks to a big kill.
 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Georgetown – 21
  • The Golden Eagles opened the second set on a 4-2 run thanks to a big solo block from Andrew Galanes.
  • Georgetown was forced into their first timeout of the set as the Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run thanks to a kill from David Galanes and a service ace from Ernest Broaster to make it 9-4.
  • It wasn't long before Georgetown made it a game once again as their 6-0 run made it a one-point Golden Eagle lead 12-11 as they call a timeout to regroup.
  • Cornerstone responded well out of the timeout as they found a kill from Andrew Galanes as Ernest Broaster would deny an attack to make it a 16-13 Golden Eagle lead.
  • Georgetown would continue to hang around as they would tie the set at 19.
  • A big block from Joshua Beaumont and Andrew Galanes turned the tide towards the Golden Eagles as David Galanes would follow with a service to ace to make it 22-20 Cornerstone.
  • Cornerstone would take the final three points of the set thanks to an Ernest Broaster kill and attack errors from Georgetown, 25-21.
 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Georgetown – 22
  • The third set opened in a back-and-forth affair as kills from Ernest Broaster, Joshua Beaumont, and Andrew Galanes made it a 4-4 game.
  • Georgetown has found their rhythm as a 5-1 run sees them take a 9-6 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
  • Cornerstone responded nicely as they would outscore Georgetown 6-2 to take a 12-11 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Andrew Galanes and Ernest Broaster.
  • The National Champs don't back down as they continue to prove to be a difficult match as they tie it at 15 after a solo block.
  • Georgetown would call a timeout as Ernest Broaster and his serves have proved to be problematic as back-to-back service aces made it an 18-15 Golden Eagle lead.
  • Cornerstone was forced into a timeout of their own as Georgetown responded with a 4-0 run to retake the lead 19-18.
  • After Georgetown would take a 21-19 lead, David Galanes would find a kill and then the Tigers would follow with an error to help the Golden Eagles tie it at 21 late.
  • The Golden Eagles rallied together and played together the final four points as they take the third set 25-22 after an Ernest Broaster final point kill.
 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Georgetown – 19
  • Georgetown jumped out to a 4-2 lead over the Golden Eagles as they took advantage of some Cornerstone miscues.
  • A kill from Patrick Voloch and David Galanes highlight a 4-0 Cornerstone run where they took the lead over the Tigers 7-6.
  • The fourth set continued to play close as the game is tied at 11 after a Georgetown kill.
  • The Golden Eagles started to find some momentum as a 4-2 run saw them take a 15-13 lead after an Andrew Galanes kill.
  • Joshua Beaumont would record two straight kills then follow with a block to help the Golden Eagles take a 21-17 lead late in the fourth.
  • Cornerstone wins the fourth set 25-19 on an Andrew Galanes kill as the Golden Eagles take down the reigning champs 3-1.
