Sylvania, Ohio – Women's Basketball took a trip to Ohio to take on Lourdes where they entered the new year undefeated in conference play. The Gray Wolves were able to break that streak with an 82-62 victory thanks to a strong offensive performance. The Golden Eagles shot 35.7% from the field which did not do them any favors.
Jaxi Long continued her hot streak as she led the team with 19 points which can be used as a steppingstone as the Golden Eagles prepare for their next battle. The Ladies next test will come against Lawrence Tech on the road Wednesday, January 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 62 Lourdes – 82
- First Quarter
- The first quarter started out strong for both defenses as the score remained at 0-0 after the first two minutes.
- Jaxi Long got right back into the action with the first bucket of the contest to give Cornerstone the early lead.
- Laura Innerebner and Mackenzie Goodwin began to take advantage of the free throw stripe, yet they trailed 8-7 with five minutes left in the first quarter.
- The Gray Wolves gained momentum in the latter half of the first quarter with a few buckets to extend their lead to 12-9 with three minutes left to play.
- Lourdes continued to find success on the fast break in the first quarter as they finished on a 6-0 run to lead Cornerstone 20-11 after the first period.
- Second Quarter
- Cornerstone's slow start to the game continued as they found themselves down 23-11 with eight minutes left to play in the second quarter.
- Julie Ashbaugh put together a strong drive to bring the Gray Wolves lead down to 10 points with seven minutes left on the clock.
- Lourdes answered right back with three straight buckets to extend their lead to 29-13.
- Laura Innerebner found a much-needed Cornerstone bucket at the halfway mark of the second quarter as the Golden Eagles trailed by 14 points.
- Jaxi Long tallied her eighth point of the game with two free throws and a smooth runner yet Cornerstone trailed 29-19.
- The Gray Wolves found another 6-0 run late in the second quarter which extended their lead to 35-19 with one minute left to play in the first half.
- Stephanie Ainsworth knocked down a pair of free throws to pull Cornerstone closer as they neared the end of the second quarter.
- Lourdes found a deep three to close out the half and led by 17 points going into the break.
- Third Quarter
- The Gray Wolves picked up right where they left off and found the first bucket of the second half with a strong move at the rim.
- Laura Innerebner and Mackenzie Goodwin both found baskets to help Cornerstone on a 4-0 run that cut the Lourdes lead to 42-25 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
- Lourdes answered right back once again with their own 4 point run to extend their lead back to 21 points.
- Stephanie Ainsworth block at the defensive end led to a clutch three from Jaxi Long as the Golden Eagles looked to climb back into the game.
- Jaxi Long added another bucket for the Golden Eagles which cut the lead to 16 points with five minutes left to play in the third quarter.
- Both teams found success from the free throw line as it was back and forth in the third quarter.
- Emma Costen found her second bucket of the game which made the game 55-36 in favor of the Gray Wolves with two minutes left in the third quarter.
- Olivia Kubik found her first points of the game late in the third quarter off a deep three that cut the Lourdes lead to 20 points with one minute left on the clock.
- The Gray Wolves knocked down their second buzzer beater of the game to finish out the third quarter which gave them complete control at 62-41.
- Fourth Quarter
- Olivia Kubik opened the points in the final quarter with a strong drive to the rim as she finished around three defenders.
- Jaxi Long knocked down two free throws and Olivia Kubik tallied another bucket which helped Cornerstone cut the lead to 64-47 with eight minutes left on the clock.
- Lourdes found another 4-0 run in the fourth quarter which continued to add to their lead.
- Jaxi Long found her 19th point of the contest off another strong drive at the net with six minutes left to play.
- Julie Ashbaugh converted a three-point play for the Golden Eagles which cut the lead to 16 points.
- Jaylee Long got in on the points late in the fourth with a deep three pointer for the Golden Eagles.
- The Gray Wolves continued to tally buckets as they led 74-55 with three minutes yet to play.
- Abby Hall and Emma Steele found buckets late in the contest, but Cornerstone was defeated 82-62.
By the Numbers
10 – Lourdes found success pushing the ball up the floor with 10 fast break points.
54.1% – The Gray Wolves also shot a strong 54.1% from the field in route to their victory.
20 – Cornerstone won the battle on the bench with 20 points compared to Lourdes 8.
