Tough Rivalry Match for Women’s Volleyball

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball was taken out in three sets by the Saints of Aquinas College down the Beltline inside of the Sturrus Sport and Fitness Center. The first set was close as the Saints took it 25-21, thanks largely to a five-point run midway through the set. The Golden Eagles would continue to fight through each set but dropped set three 25-22 to the Saints. Aquinas College would take the win 3-0 against the Golden Eagles inside of their home arena. Women's Volleyball continues their season next Friday against the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio at 7 p.m.

Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 0 #RV Aquinas – 3 (21-25, 19-25, 22-25)

First Set: Cornerstone – 23 Aquinas – 25

  • The first point came from an attack by Gwyn VerBerkmoes to put Cornerstone up 1-0 right away.

  • A three point run for Aquinas would follow to give the Saints the lead 3-1 in set one.

  • Anastacia Trevino got a kill to keep the lead with Cornerstone 7-5.

  • A five-point run by Aquinas saw them to a strong 13-8 lead in set one.

  • Two kills by Emmalee Murphy brought the set back within reach for the Golden Eagles, as they trail 10-13.

  • A kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes began a three point run for Cornerstone, which saw them come within two points of the Saints. The Golden Eagles were still behind 16-18.

  • An unfortunate error by Cornerstone handed the first set over to Aquinas College 25-21.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 19 Aquinas – 25

  • A run of three points by the Saints set them up well in set two to hold the lead for the majority of the set.

  • The set from Alison Pignataro was on the mark for Anastacia Trevino to put the ball away for another kill. Cornerstone still trailed by four points 8-12.

  • A three-point run by the Golden Eagles kept their hopes alive in set two, beginning with a kill from Aubrey Johnson and ending with a kill by Emmalee Murphy. Cornerstone were still behind 17-22.

  • The Golden Eagles would be unable to make it back in set two and dropped the set 25-19 to the Saints.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 22 Aquinas – 25

  • The Golden Eagles came out swinging in set three with a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes early on, which saw Cornerstone to a 3-1 lead early on.

  • Another run of three points for Cornerstone kept them within reach of the Saints, but they then trailed 9-10.

  • Gabby VerBerkmoes got another kill to see Cornerstone to a four-point run in set three. This tied up the set 13-13 for the Golden Eagles.

  • Alli Pickard's serve saw its way to the floor for an ace that gave Cornerstone a one-point advantage in set three 16-15.

  • The Saints fought back at the end of set three with a run of five points to win the set 25-22 on home turf.

By The Numbers:

9/.467 – Gabby VerBerkmoes led her team in kills and hitting percentage with nine kills on the night off of 15 total attempts.

31 – Alison Pignataro tallied 31 assists on the night versus Aquinas.

15 – Gianna Warwick led both teams in total digs, as she netted 15 in total.

What's Next?

Women's Volleyball continues their season next Friday against the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio at 7 p.m.
