Jaxi Long Breaks 1000 Career Points with a Win over Goshen College

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Basketball got the season off to a strong start with a win over the Maple Leafs of Goshen College inside of the Hutzell Athletic Center. Jaxi Long and Julie Ashbaugh highlighted Cornerstone's offense in the match as Ashbaugh netted 26 total points and Jaxi Long had 23, breaking 1000 total career points in the second quarter of play against the Maple Leafs. The first half ended with Cornerstone up by 12, 40-28. Cornerstone's offense kept rolling, as Julie Ashbaugh shot 76.5% to get 26 total points. The Golden Eagles took the win 79-68 against Goshen College. Cornerstone continue the opening weekend with a NAIA top ten matchup against the #8 Cougars of Saint Francis University this Saturday at 2 p.m. inside of the Hutzell Athletic Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 79 Goshen – 68

  • First Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh began the season for Cornerstone with a nicely made layup to make the score 2-0.

    • Jaxi Long made her first three-pointer of the season to keep the Golden Eagles ahead 13-7 in the first quarter of play.

    • A second three point shot in a row for Jaxi Long was good. Cornerstone remained on top 16-11.

    • A good layup from Abby Hall saw Cornerstone to a seven-point lead to end the first quarter 22-15.

  • Second Quarter

    • The Maple Leafs opened up the second quarter with seven straight points to tie the game back up 22-22.

    • Cornerstone were able to break through soon after with a layup from Julie Ashbaugh, as Cornerstone retook the lead 24-22.

    • A layup from Abi Bandstra and another successful three from Jaxi Long brought back a five-point lead for Cornerstone 33-28.

    • Back-to-back layups by Abi Bandstra sought to widen the gap between the two sides as the Golden Eagles still led 36-28.

    • With a successful mid-ranged jump shot, Jaxi Long broke 1000 total career points with two more points on the board versus the Maple Leafs.

    • Jaxi Long grabbed her fourth rebound of the night ending the second quarter with a 12 point lead 40-28.

  • Third Quarter

    • Abby Hall made the three point attempt for her seventh point of the night to keep Cornerstone on top of the Maple Leafs 47-35.

    • She kept it coming from the arch, another three pointer saw its way through the hoop, as Abby Hall made another to make the score 54-37 Cornerstone.

    • Nearing the end of the third quarter, Jaxi Long went to the free throw line and made both of her attempts to keep the offense going for the Golden Eagles as they still led in the game 58-44.

    • The third quarter would end with the same score difference as the last, as Cornerstone held a 12 point lead 58-46.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh opened up the scoring in the final quarter with a 2 point conversion. The Golden Eagles were still ahead 60-46.

    • A well placed pass by Jaxi Long helped assist Abby Hall to another successful three point shot as the score continued to rise 64-51.

    • Julie Ashbaugh broke the 20 point mark with two more successful layups against the Maple Leafs as Cornerstone inched towards 70 points 68-53.

    • Ellie Neuhaus made the jumper to keep Cornerstone up by 10 with just over two minutes left 76-66.

    • A last second rebound by Jaxi Long ended the offensive possibilities for Goshen College as Cornerstone took the win 79-68.

By the Numbers 

1000/23 – Jaxi Long broke 1000 total career points in the second quarter, as she finished the night with 23 total points against the Maple Leafs.

26/76.5% – Cornerstone's Julie Ashbaugh led both teams in total points at 26 and made 13 of 17 field goals for a FG% of 76.5.

37 – Rebounds were the difference maker for Cornerstone has they out-rebounded the Maple Leafs 37-25, 11 of those coming from Julie Ashbaugh and 10 from Jaxi Long.
