Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Conference Opener

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Despite a late comeback effort, Women's Basketball falls to Siena Heights to open conference play. Jaxi Long led the Golden Eagles with 22 points while adding four assists. Gracie Gortmaker recorded a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Eagles hit the road to face Lourdes University on Saturday with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 71 Siena Heights – 74
  • First Quarter
    •  The game started off with two scores for SHU, but Cornerstone answered right back with a three from Jaxi Long and a layup by Julie Ashbaugh to give CU a 5-4 lead.
    • A Jaxi Long jumper paired with an Ellie Neuhaus layup made it a 10-9 game in CU's favor.
    • Julie Ashbaugh sunk two free throws to get the Golden Eagles within one with 2:02 left in the quarter.
    • Kylie Heck added two free throws of her own then with one second left Jaxi Long finished a layup to give us a score of 20-16 SHU to end the first quarter.
  • Second Quarter
    • Ellie Neuhaus got the scoring started for Cornerstone in the second half with a layup.
    • The Golden Eagles cut into the Saints lead with a with a three from Maddie Schuur making it a 24-21 game.
    • Gracie Gortmaker fought hard in the paint finishing layups on back-to-back possessions.
    • Jaxi Long fought her way through traffic, getting her layup to fall and sinking the and one opportunity. 
    • Cornerstone cut Siena Heights' lead to three on a three pointer from Jaxi Long
    • CU finished the half with a layup from Gracie Gortmaker which sent the teams to the locker rooms with Siena Heights up 39-35.
  • Third Quarter
    • The third quarter started with the Saints going on a 6-0 run before Gracie Gortmaker knocked down her first three pointer of the game.
    • Gracie Gortmaker continued to contribute on offense sinking two free throws to make it a 46-40 game.
    • Abby Hall ended the Golden Eagles scoring drought with her first three of the night.
    • Cornerstone gets within eight as Julie Ashbaugh fought through a foul to finish her layup and sunk the and one opportunity.
    • Gracie Gortmaker drains her jumper at the buzzer to make it 58-48 SHU at the end of the third quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Jaxi Long started the scoring for CU in the fourth draining both of her free throws.
    • Cornerstone got into a rhythm with Maddi Schuur finishing a layup followed by a three from Abby Hall to get CU within six.
    • Two more free throws from Jaxi Long made it a 66-61 game in favor of the Saints with 2:47 to go.
    • A layup and one good free throw courtesy of Jaxi Long got the Golden Eagles within four with 36 seconds to go.
    • Abby Hall nails a fadeaway three with 1.8 seconds remaining to make it a 73-71 game.
By the Numbers 
15/10 – Gracie Gortmaker recorded a double double scoring 15 points and collecting 10 boards. 
22/4 – Jaxi Long led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 22 points while also tallying four assists.
9/6 – Julie Ashbaugh added nine points and six rebounds to the Cornerstone effort.  
What's Next? 
The Golden Eagles hit the road to face Lourdes University on Saturday with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
