Sylvania, Ohio – The Golden Eagles traveled across the Midwest for a weekend matchup against the Gray Wolves. The Golden Eagles got into a back-and-forth battle to begin the game but over time Lourdes was able to wear down the Cornerstone defense to take an 80-64 win. Cornerstone will now set their sights on Defiance College as they host on Tuesday, November 25
th at 5:30 p.m.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 64 Lourdes – 80
First Quarter
- The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after the first three minutes of the game thanks to Julie Ashbaugh gathering the first two buckets.
- Julie Ashbaugh and Jaxi Long continued the scoring in the first quarter as they led the team to a 9-6 advantage at the 5-minute mark.
- Laura Innerebner went to work in the paint as she secured Cornerstone a 13-12 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter.
- Cornerstone sat on a three-point lead with less than one minute on the clock after Abi Bandstra sliced through the Gray Wolves defense for a smooth two-point bucket.
- Julie Ashbaugh was the standout plater in the first quarter of the game with eight points helping the Golden Eagles reach a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
- Jaxi Long continued to keep the Golden Eagles in the game with back-to-back jumpers in a tight battle thus far.
- Cornerstone saw Abby Hall add a nice layup to help take a 25-24 lead for the Golden Eagles.
- Lourdes began to take some momentum into the back half of the second quarter as they led 32-29.
- The ladies trailed 41-33 at the 1-minute mark of the second quarter with too many turnovers and careless fouls leaving them behind the pace of the Gray Wolves.
- Laura Innerebner found her second bucket of the game, but Cornerstone headed into the locker room down 43-35 with changes needed to find a way back into the game.
Third Quarter
- Julie Ashbaugh started the second half exactly how she did the first with a flurry of points for the Golden Eagles, but they remained behind by five points in the contest.
- The Gray Wolves continued to lead the game 54-47 with three minutes left to play in the third quarter.
- The Golden Eagles success stayed with Julie Ashbaugh as she finished the quarter with 12 points of her own, yet Cornerstone could not break the lead as they trailed 64-57 at the final buzzer of the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- The Gray Wolves came out with two fast buckets and held a double-digit lead headed into the final seven minutes of the game.
- Jaxi Long got the Golden Eagles back into the game with back-to-back buckets and an and one finish to help CU cut the lead to six points as they head into the final few minutes of the game.
- The Gray Wolves responded quickly with a three-point backet and a jumper to jump back out to a healthy lead with only two minutes remaining.
- Lourdes managed to run away with this game in the final minutes taking it 80-64 at the final buzzer.
