Sioux City, Iowa – Women's Volleyball loses hard fought battle with IU-Kokomo 3-1 in their second game of pool play at the NAIA WVB National Championship.
Aubrey Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 21 kills while also recording 14 digs in the match.
Josilyn Potter shined in the match as well with 14 kills and four blocks.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 1 IU-Kokomo – 3 (24-26, 34-32, 19-25, 23-25)
First Set: Cornerstone – 24 IU-Kokomo – 26
- The Golden Eagles started off the match taking a 5-3 lead with a block from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Aubrey Johnson paired with a kill from Lauren Bower.
- Cornerstone maintained a lead as kills from Josilyn Potter and Gwyn VerBerkmoes made it an 11-8 game.
- A handful of aces brought Kokomo back into the game evening the match at 16.
- CU kept it close as a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes and an error by Cougars tied the match again, this time at 24.
- Despite their comeback effort, Kokomo scored two straight points to win the first set.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 34 IU-Kokomo – 32
- The second set started off similar to the first as the Golden Eagles took a 5-3 lead with four kills from Aubrey Johnson.
- Cornerstone extended their lead to 10-5 off back-to-back kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- IU-Kokomo went on a five-point run to get back into the match and tie it at ten.
- The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own taking a five-point lead highlighted by an ace from Gianna Warwick and two more kills from Aubrey Johnson.
- The Cougars fought back and tied the match 19-19.
- Multiple kills from Aubrey Johnson and Josilyn Potter keep the match even as the score moved to 24-24.
- The back-and-forth action continued as the set is even at 28-28 with more kills coming from Aubrey Johnson.
- Some magical kills from Josilyn Potter continue the set, but the score stays even at 32-32.
- Aubrey Johnson and Josilyn Potter finish off the set with back-to-back kills giving CU a 34-32 win in set two.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 19 IU-Kokomo – 25
- The third set began with CU falling behind 6-3 with a kill from Aubrey Johnson and two errors by Kokomo.
- The Cougars extended their lead over Cornerstone to 12-6 forcing CU to use an early timeout.
- Cornerstone got back within four as Josilyn Potter and Aubrey Johnson combine for multiple kills to make it a 18-14 game.
- IU-Kokomo went on a 7-3 run and defeated the Golden Eagles 25-19 in the third set.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 23 IU-Kokomo – 25
- Cornerstone started the fourth set with five straight kills, two from Gabby VerBerkmoes and two from Aubrey Johnson.
- The Golden Eagles maintained their five-point lead as kills from Lauren Bower and Aubrey Johnson made it a 8-3 game.
- CU continued to fight off the Cougars comeback attempts keeping a five-point advantage as the score moved to 12-7.
- Despite Kokomo getting within one, the Golden Eagles scored three straight points to go up 15-11.
- IU-Kokomo fought back hard in the fourth set and tied the game at 18-18.
- A couple of errors by the Cougars and a kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes put CU up 23-22 and forced Kokomo to take a timeout.
- An ace and a kill from the Cougars ultimately end the set and match with CU falling 25-23 in the fourth set.
