Women’s Basketball highlights Senior Night with a victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Basketball hosted Madonna where they came away with a 67-62 victory on Senior Night. Jaxi Long led the way once again as she posted 19 points for the Golden Eagles. Olivia Kubik followed right behind her with 15 of her own and Mackenzie Goodwin tallied 9 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Cornerstone will be back in action on Saturday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m with a trip to Defiance. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 67 Madonna – 62
  • First Quarter
    • The Golden Eagles kicked off the game with all five seniors in the starting lineup as they celebrated senior night. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin found the first bucket of the game down low off a strong take to the basket. 
    • Cornerstone then jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead thanks to buckets from Emma Costen and Stephanie Ainsworth
    • The Crusaders found some buckets fall and made the game 10-10 with three minutes left to play in the first quarter. 
    • Jaxi Long checked into the game and knocked down a long two for the Golden Eagles yet they trailed 13-12 with only a minute left to play. 
    • Stephanie Ainsworth and Jaxi Long led an 8-0 finish to the first quarter as they had a 18-13 advantage headed into the next period. 
  • Second Quarter
    • The Crusaders struck first in the second quarter with a strong post move at the net. 
    • Jaxi Long began to dominate with two deep three-point buckets that she sank back-to-back to get Cornerstone a 28-19 lead. 
    • Olivia Kubik added to her highlight reel with a smooth layup and a deep three pointer to add to the Cornerstone scoring. 
    • Jaxi Long added another bucket with a nice left-handed runner in the paint to give Cornerstone the 35-21 advantage with two minutes left in the half. 
    • Madonna ended the first half on a 4-0 run to find some momentum to use for the second half as they trailed 35-24. 
  • Third Quarter
    • The first basket of the third quarter belonged to Stephanie Ainsworth off a strong post move that kick started the Golden Eagles offense. 
    • Madonna continued to fight their way back in this game, yet they trailed 38-30 with six minutes left to play. 
    • Emma Costen and Laura Innerebner found buckets down the stretch of the third to continue the dominant Golden Eagle performance. 
    • Maddie Schuur found her stoke from behind the arc and nailed a three-point shot for Cornerstone to give them a 45-34 lead. 
    • Madonna managed to cut the Cornerstone lead to six points with two minutes left in the quarter. 
    • Jaxi Long knocked down another three point bucket for the home team as they led 50-41 with one minute left on the clock. 
    • The Crusaders managed to close out the quarter well and only trailed by five points. 
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Olivia Kubik nailed a three pointer to give Cornerstone the momentum to start the fourth quarter.
    • Madonna cut the lead to 57-51 at the five-minute mark of the quarter but Olivia Kubik answered right away with another smooth drive and finish in the paint. 
    • Laura Innerebner and Stephanie Ainsworth found clutch buckets down low to secure the Golden Eagles a nine-point lead with two minutes left in the game. 
    • Jaxi Long sealed the game with four crucial free throws as Cornerstone came away with the 67-62 victory to cap off Senior Night. 
By the Numbers 
93.4% – Cornerstone led for over 90% of the game in their victory over the Crusaders. 
28 – The Golden Eagles won the bench battle as they scored 28 points compared to Madonna's 23.
46.2% – Cornerstone shot 46.2% from behind the arc.

The Golden Eagles next test comes on the road against Defiance on Saturday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m.
