GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Basketball snuck in a 1 PM game against Lawrence Tech ahead of some winter weather and came away with a 74-53 victory over Lawrence Tech. The Golden Eagles came out aggressive and ready to go as they never looked back from their 22-7 lead after the first quarter.
Jaxi Long led the way with a game high 20 points as
Mackenzie Goodwin became the 30
th player in women's basketball history hit 1,000 career points in her 18-point performance. Women's Basketball moves to 13-12 (12-5) on the year as they hit the road to take on Cleary on Saturday, February 15.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 74 Lawrence Tech - 53
First Quarter – Cornerstone – 22 Lawrence Tech – 7
- Jaxi Long scored the first points of the game for the Golden Eagles but both sides have been slow to score through the first three minutes.
- Through the first five-minutes of the first quarter, Cornerstone leads 8-0 after a Jaxi Long layup.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone early as Jaxi Long found another easy basket around the rim as they lead 14-5.
- Mackenzie Goodwin and Abi Bandstra made back-to-back layups before the first quarter buzzer as the Golden Eagles lead 22-7 after the first.
Second Quarter – Cornerstone – 41 Lawrence Tech – 23
- Mackenzie Goodwin made back-to-back layups to open the second quarter as the Golden Eagles lead big 28-11.
- The media timeout comes about in the second quarter and the Golden Eagles find themselves ahead 30-13.
- Lawrence Tech has used a 7-2 run to cut into the Golden Eagle lead 32-20 with 3:27 left in the second.
- Jaxi Long and Mackenzie Goodwin ended the offensive drought with layups as Cornerstone leads 38-23 with 1:30 left in the half.
- Emma Costen hits the first Golden Eagle three before the buzzer as Cornerstone leads Lawrence Tech 41-23 at halftime.
Third Quarter – Cornerstone – 61 Lawrence tech - 40
- Lawrence Tech opened the third quarter on quick 6-2 run to make it a 43-29 game after the first two minutes.
- Olivia Kubik and Jaxi Long ended the Golden Eagle drought with a three and a layup to extend their lead 48-31.
- With her layup with 6:11 left in third quarter, Mackenzie Goodwin became the 30th player in program history to hit 1,000 career points as the Golden Eagles lead 50-33.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone in the third quarter as an 11-3 run highlighted by an Olivia Kubik three made it 61-36 Golden Eagles.
- The Golden Eagles were held scoreless for the final three minutes of the third quarter but lead 61-40 as they head into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Cornerstone – 74 Lawrence Tech – 53
- Stephanie Ainsworth completed the three-point play to extend Cornerstones lead 66-43.
- Jaylee Long and Maddie Schuur made back-to-back threes to make it a 72-47 game with five minutes left.
- Emma Costen ended a couple minute drought with a jumper as Cornerstone is two minutes away from a victory.
- The Golden Eagles extended their win streak to five as they took down Lawrence Tech 74-53.
