SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Men's Volleyball spent their Valentine's traveling to Lawrence Tech for a conference matchup and came away with their first loss of the season, 3-1. The Blue Devils and Golden Eagles battled back-and-forth like the top 15 teams that they are, but Lawrence Tech did just enough to take down Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles held late leads in both the first and second sets, but were unable to finish. Men's Volleyball is now 8-1 (1-1) on the young season as they return home to take on #RV Lourdes on Tuesday, February 18.
Game Recap – #9 Lawrence Tech – 3 #13 Cornerstone – 1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25)
First Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 23
- The first set opened tight as a kill from Andrew Galanes knotted it at threes early.
- Lawrence Tech has found some early momentum as they lead the Golden Eagles 6-4.
- It continued to remain a tight battle early as a kill from David Galanes gave the Golden Eagles a 9-8 advantage.
- Back-to-back errors by the Blue Devils helped Cornerstone extend their lead 12-10.
- The theme of the first set continued to be a back-and-forth battle as Lawrence Tech used a kill to tie it at 16.
- Lawrence Tech was forced to use their first timeout of the set as a Golden Eagle 4-0 run saw them take a 20-17 lead after kills from Joshua Beaumont and David Galanes.
- It wasn't long before Lawrence Tech answered with a run of their own as a 5-1 run forced Cornerstone into a timeout as the Blue Devils lead 22-21 late.
- The Blue Devils just did just enough in the first set as their final point block on the Golden Eagles saw them take set one 25-23.
Second Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 22
- Just like the first set, the start of the second was tight as a block from Hubert Sliwinksi and Ernest Broaster made it a 4-3 Cornerstone lead.
- A long rally ends in the Golden Eagles favor as the kill from Ernest Broaster tied the game at eight.
- The frontline of the Blue Devils has been bothersome for the Golden Eagles as another block from Lawrence Tech forced Cornerstone into a timeout as they trail 13-10.
- It continued to be all Lawrence Tech in the second set as another block and kill saw them extend their lead 18-13 over the Golden Eagles.
- Back-to-back service aces from Patrick Voloch gave the Golden Eagles some momentum as a block from Joshua Beaumont and Andrew Galanes forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout as it is now 18-17.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles as they stormed back to take a 19-18 lead over Lawrence Tech thanks to their frontline returning the favor with blocks of their own.
- It remained a tight battle late in the second set as a kill from Ernest Broaster tied it at 22.
- It was a replay of the first set as Lawrence Tech did just enough late once again to take set two 25-22 over the Golden Eagles.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 18
- The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 4-1 lead thanks to a service ace from David Galanes.
- An Ernest Broaster kill kept the Golden Eagles ahead early, 7-5.
- The Golden Eagles found some momentum after Lawrence Tech tied it at eight. The kill from Ernest Broaster and Andrew Galanes made it a 14-10 Cornerstone lead.
- Lawrence Tech was forced into a timeout as the Golden Eagles used a Blue Devils error late to take a 19-14 advantage.
- Patrick Voloch and Andrew Galanes found kills late as the Golden Eagles lead 23-17.
- The Golden Eagles forced a fourth set thanks to a service ace from David Galanes and a kill from Andrew Galanes as Cornerstone wins 25-18.
Fourth Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone 20
- Lawrence Tech jumped out to an early 4-2 lead to start the fourth set thanks to multiple kills.
- After trailing early, the Golden Eagles stormed back to tie the set at seven thanks to a Blue Devil attack error.
- Lawrence Tech has continued to do the little things well as a block and kill saw them extend their lead 14-10 over the Golden Eagles.
- The run continued for Lawrence Tech as back-to-back errors made it 17-10 Blue Devils.
- Cornerstone has stuck around as a block from Joshua Beaumont and Andrew Galanes made it a 19-16 game as Lawrence Tech called a timeout.
- Another quick 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles forced Lawrence Tech into their final timeout as the Blue Devils lead late 21-19.
- Lawrence Tech used the Golden Eagles errors to take the fourth and final set 25-20.
