GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time in the five-year career of men's volleyball, they have won against Lourdes as they took down the Gray Wolves 3-1. It was a total team effort all around today for men's volleyball as they saw 19 kills and seven blocks from
Ernest Broaster, 42 assists and 11 digs from
Patrick Voloch, and finally 20 digs from
Kyi Jagorin in the much-needed bound back victory over Lourdes. Men's Volleyball is now 9-1 (2-1) on the year as they host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday, February 21.
Game Recap – #13 Cornerstone – 3 #RV Lourdes – 1 (25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 18
- Lourdes opened the first set on a quick 4-1 run thanks to multiple kills to set the tone.
- The Golden Eagles would respond with a 4-0 run to take a 5-4 lead thanks to kills from Ernest Broaster and Andrew Galanes.
- It continued to remain a tight battle early in the first set as back-to-back Gray Wolve errors made it a 10-8 Golden Eagle lead.
- Ernest Broaster recorded back-to-back kills for the Golden Eagles to extend their lead 17-11.
- The Golden Eagles found a kill late from Joshua Beaumont as that made it 21-16.
- Cornerstone took care of business late in the first set as they used back-to-back Lourdes errors to take it 25-18.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 23
- Cornerstone opened the second set on a 5-3 run thanks to a block from Ernest Broaster and Ethan Walker as well as a service ace from Kyi Jagorin.
- The Golden Eagles found another block from Ernest Broaster and Ethan Walker as Cornerstone continued to lead 10-7 early in the second.
- Lourdes has stuck around in the second set as back-to-back kills made it 15-13.
- Ethan Walker ended the Lourdes 3-0 run with a kill to make it 18-17 Cornerstone late.
- Another Lourdes 3-0 run saw them take a 20-19 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Back-to-back kills from David Galanes and Ernest Broaster forced Lourdes into a timeout as the Golden Eagles lead late 23-22.
- Ernest Broaster found the final two kills for the Golden Eagles thanks to tips as Cornerstone won set two 25-23.
Third Set: Lourdes – 25 Cornerstone - 16
- Lourdes opened the third set with three straight kills to take a 3-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone has used three straight errors from Lourdes to get right back into the set, 5-4.
- A Joshua Beaumont kill and an error from Lourdes tied the set at 10 as it continued to be a battle back-and-forth.
- Lourdes has continued to find kills in the third set as another helped them grow their lead 15-12 over the Golden Eagles.
- The Golden Eagles were forced into their first timeout of the set as a long rally favored the Gray Wolves as their kill made it 17-13.
- Lourdes continued to take advantage of some Golden Eagle errors as they now lead 20-14.
- The Gray Wolves finished the third set strong as they forced a fourth set with their 25-16 victory.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 17
- Lourdes opened the fourth on a quick 3-2 run thanks to back-to-back kills.
- It continued to be tight early in the fourth set as a kill from Matthew True made it a 7-6 Golden Eagle lead.
- A kill from Andrew Galanes followed by a block from Ernest Broaster and Joshua Beaumont tied the match at 10.
- Three straight blocks from the Golden Eagles helped them take a 13-11 advantage over Lourdes.
- Lourdes was forced into their first timeout of the set thanks to a 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles that was highlighted by a block from Ethan Walker and Matthew True. Cornerstone leads 18-14 late.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles as Lourdes called their final timeout of the set as the kill from Matthew True made it 20-14.
- Ernest Broaster continued the run with a service ace as that point made it 22-14.
- The Golden Eagles finished the fourth set strong thanks to kills from Ernest Broaster as they win 25-17
