Men’s Volleyball defeats a spirited Bethel squad 3-1 on the road

Mishawaka, Ind. – Men's Volleyball faced more adversity than they expected from a Bethel squad especially in the second set of the match. The Golden Eagles managed to come away with a convincing 3-1 win, but the second set 35-33 loss forced Cornerstone to grind to close out the rest of the match. Ernest Broaster did his thing with an impressive 25 kills in the match as Patrick Voloch provided 50 assists. Andrew Galanes also highlighted the match with 16 kills of his own for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone will travel back home for their next battle facing off against Siena Heights on Friday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. 
 
Game Recap – #6 Cornerstone – 3 Bethel – 1 (25-16, 33-35, 25-20, 25-19)

 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 16
  • The Golden Eagles weathered the storm early after being down 2-0 to take four straight points thanks to strong serving from Ernest Broaster
  • Andrew Galanes picked up right where he left off with back-to-back kills to give Cornerstone a 6-3 advantage. 
  • Cornerstone forced Bethel into their first timeout of the set after a massive block from David Galanes with the set at 10-4. 
  • The most consistent stat line for the Golden Eagles continued in this first set with Patrick Voloch setting up Ernest Broaster as they led 15-9. 
  • The dynamic duo of David Galanes and Andrew Galanes continued to shine as Cornerstone inched closer to a first set victory with a 19-11 advantage. 
  • Ernest Broaster and Andrew Galanes finished the first set both with five kills apiece as they cruised to a 25-16 set victory. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 33 Bethel – 35
  • The Pilots started off quickly in the second set with another early 2-0 lead. 
  • Ethan Walker and Andrew Galanes turned the tide quickly with a big-time block for the Golden Eagles to get back on level terms with Bethel. 
  • The service aces continued to flow for Ernest Broaster in the second set as he added two more points for Cornerstone. 
  • The Pilots found a way to keep up with the Golden Eagles after multiple attacking errors that led to a 7-7 game. 
  • Patrick Voloch provided perfect passes down the stretch of the second set to give Cornerstone a 13-10 lead. 
  • Bethel refused to give up in the set as they regained the lead at 15-14 in a back-and-forth battle. 
  • Ethan Walker block and Ernest Broaster kill forced Bethel into a timeout as they led 21-19 late in the second set. 
  • Bethel came to life late in the set taking Cornerstone back and forth down the stretch to tie the game at 29-29 as Ernest Broaster collected clutch kills to keep the Golden Eagles in the set. 
  • Pure insanity continued in this second set as we saw the 21st tie of the game at 31-31 all. 
  • The second set fireworks rewarded Bethel with a 35-33 win thanks to a massive block to shut out the Golden Eagles sweep aspirations. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 20
  • Hubert Sliwinski and David Galanes opened the third set with kills as the score was 2-2. 
  • The set was full of errors, but Andrew Galanes kills finally separated the teams with an 8-7 lead for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone forced the Pilots into their first timeout of the set with a massive Hubert Sliwinski and Andrew Galanes block at the net. 
  • The Golden Eagles saw another service ace come from Mitchell Carrera as they took a 16-9 advantage. 
  • The story in the third set was attacking errors from the Bethel squad as they trailed 19-11 at their second timeout of the set.
  • The block party led the way for the Golden Eagles as Hubert Sliwinski, Ernest Broaster, and Andrew Galanes all got up high as Cornerstone led 22-16. 
  • Patrick Voloch set up three more perfect assists for the Golden Eagles to take the third set and a 2-1 lead in the match. 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 19
  • Bethel took an early 2-0 lead to start the fourth set which was the story of all three previous sets for the Pilots. 
  • Joshua Beaumont went up high in the middle of the net to secure a set tie kill at 5-5. 
  • David Galanes added two more kills for the Golden Eagles as the game was stuck close at 7-7. 
  • The Golden Eagles continued to rely on their main man Ernest Broaster who struck the Bethel court two more times to bring the game to 11-11. 
  • Matthew True got his name on the scorer's sheet with a clutch kill to regain the lead for Cornerstone at 15-14. 
  • Brunno Peres service ace saw another Bethel timeout come as Cornerstone led 19-16. 
  • Cornerstone relied on their defensive blocks late in the fourth set to make the game 22-18 as they inched closer to the victory. 
  • The Golden Eagles secured their fourth win in a row with a Matthew True swing to close out the 3-1 win.  
By The Numbers:
23 – The second set held 23 ties with both teams having six set point opportunities. 
13 – Cornerstone tallied 13 blocks in the match compared to Bethel's four. 
.304 – The Golden Eagles hit at an impressive .304 rate in the victory.
