Ernest Broaster who led the game with 23 kills and 4 aces in the match.
Patrick Voloch also put together a strong 50 assist game with
Kyi Jagorin also defending well with 17 digs. The Golden Eagles will defend their undefeated record next against Aquinas on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Game One Recap – #13 Cornerstone – 3 Governors State – 1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-14, 25-16)
First Set: Cornerstone – 24 Governors State – 26
- The first set opened with back and forth kills as Ernest Broaster and Hubert Sliwinski both scored for the Golden Eagles as the match was at 3-3.
- Ernest Broaster put together back-to-back service aces to give Cornerstone a 10-6 lead.
- Errors began to pile up for both teams as Governors State inched closer only down 11-9.
- Andrew Galanes found two kills for the home squad as they entered the halfway mark of the set.
- The Jaguars fought bask fast as they took a 17-16 lead over the Golden Eagles which left Mol Arena stunned in the first set.
- A nail biter down the stretch saw Patrick Voloch set up Ernest Broaster for a massive kill to make the score 24-23 at set point.
- Three straight kills for the Jaguars secured them the first set victory at 26-24.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Governors State – 17
- The second set started with three straight flawless sets from Patrick Voloch to secure an early 3-1 lead.
- Governors State continued to rely on their heavy hitters as they found success to bring the set back to 7-7.
- Ernest Broaster continued to amaze with multiple kills down the stretch for the Golden Eagles.
- Strong serving from Kyi Jagorin and David Galanes closed out the set as Cornerstone ran away with a 25-17 set victory.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Governors State – 14
- The third set started with errors on the Jaguars that boosted Cornerstone to a quick 6-2 advantage.
- Ernest Broaster tallied five kills in the first 10 Cornerstone points as they led 10-6.
- Matthew True went up high for a massive kill that gave Cornerstone a 17-9 lead.
- Joshua Beaumont helped close out the set for Cornerstone with two kills as they cruised past the Jaguars 25-14 in the third set.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Governors State – 16
- Governors State jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set with multiple attacking errors coming from the Golden Eagles.
- Matthew True found two big time kills to even the set at 7-7 with Cornerstone eyeing their third straight set.
- The Jaguars did not give in as they managed to take a 13-12 lead off more attacking errors.
- Cornerstone then went on an 8-0 with help from all over the floor as they sat on match point at 24-15.
- Patrick Voloch put the match on a plate for Joshua Beaumont who landed the kill and took the match 3-1 for Cornerstone.
