DAVENPORT, Fla. – Baseball was back in action with their final double header of the week as they took on Ave Maria and came away with two tough losses. Ave Maria hit the long ball in game one on their way to an 8-0 victory. The second game was much closer as the pitchers took control of the game, but Ave Maria snuck out a 4-3 victory. Baseball now falls to 0-8 on the year as they look to enjoy their one day off before returning to action on Monday, March 3 against Northwestern College.
Game One Recap: Ave Maria – 8 Cornerstone - 0
- Ave Maria struck first in the bottom of the first as a two out three-run homerun made it 3-0 early.
- The Gyrenes hit their second three-run homerun of the game as this one helped Ave Maria make it 6-0 in the second.
- After three innings of play, the Golden Eagles trail the Gyrenes 6-0.
- Ave Maria tacked on another run thanks to a double but a good defensive play by Matthew Kindley, Michael Ruiz, and John Caliendo cut down the runner trying for three. 7-0 Gyrenes after the fourth.
- After a leadoff hit by pitch, Ave Maria would bring him home to extend their lead 8-0 after the fifth.
- Alex Hayward worked a clean bottom of the sixth with a strikeout as the Golden Eagles head to the final inning down 8-0.
- The Golden Eagles lead off the seventh with a hit by pitch but were unable to do anything with it as they were held to two hits in the 8-0 loss.
Game Two Recap: Ave Maria – 4 Cornerstone - 3
- Conner Comiskey opened the game striking out the side to set the tone for the Golden Eagles after the top of the first.
- It has been a pitchers dual through the first two innings as the game remained scoreless.
- Ave Maria strung some hits together in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- After loading the bases, Matthew Kindley would come through with a bases clearing double to help give Cornerstone a 3-2 advantage.
- The Golden Eagle error comes back to haunt them as Ave Maria would tie it at three after the top of the fourth.
- The game heads to the sixth inning tied 3-3 as Conner Comiskey remains in control on the mound for the Golden Eagles.
- Ave Maria loaded the bases in the top of the sixth thanks to two walks and a hit by pitch and would score one on a sac fly to take a 4-3 lead over Cornerstone.
- Bobby Kelly worked around a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to keep the game 4-3 as the Golden Eagles have one last chance in the bottom of the seventh.
- Cornerstone led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and would later steal second to get into scoring position with nobody out. The Golden Eagles were unable to get that tying run home as they fall to Ave Maria in game two 4-3.
