Men's Volleyball goes 1-1 on their trip to Chicago

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Men's Volleyball was back in action with a one-day tournament in Chicago where they took on Governors State and Jamestown. In game one, the Golden Eagles fell 3-1 to Governors State as 25 attacking errors hurt Cornerstone in a loss that was an evenly matched game. In game two, the Golden Eagles swept Jamestown 3-0 in a match that was dominated by the Golden Eagles in all facets of the match. Men's Volleyball will return home to face off against Aquinas on Tuesday, March 18, returning to conference play.
 
Game One Recap – Governors State – 3 #5 Cornerstone – 1 (25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 22-25)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Governors State – 21
  • Governors State jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage thanks to back-to-back kills to open the first set.
  • Cornerstone would respond with four straight points behind three Ernest Broaster service aces to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Cornerstone and Governors have battled back-and-forth as a kill from the Jaguars tied it at 10.
  • The Golden Eagles would rattled off a 5-1 run behind big blocks from Joshua Beaumont, Andrew Galanes, and Hubert Sliwinski to take a 15-11 advantage.
  • The Jaguars have continued to stick around as a kill from Governors made it 19-18 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
  • David Galanes would collect a kill and then Governors State would record an error to help Cornerstone take a first set 25-21 victory.
 
Second Set: Governors State – 25 Cornerstone – 23
  • Cornerstone jumped out to a quick 4-1 run behind Joshua Beaumont's kill and block and a service ace from Ernest Broaster.
  • It continued to be all Golden Eagles early in the second set as a kill from Andrew Galanes made it 9-4.
  • Governors State has flipped the momentum of the set as they have scored four of the last five points to take a 12-11 advantage.
  • The momentum flipped back in favor of the Golden Eagles thanks to a 5-1 run in which they extended their lead 17-14.
  • Out of a Governors State timeout, the Jaguars would score four straight to take 20-19 advantage over the Golden Eagles late in the set.
  • Ernest Broaster and David Galanes collected kills late for the Golden Eagles to tie it at 23 but Governors would win the second set thanks to a Golden Eagle error 25-23.
 
Third Set: Governors State – 25 Cornerstone – 18
  • Cornerstone opened the third set on a quick 3-1 run thanks to a loud kill from Ernest Broaster.
  • Governors has used Cornerstones errors to rally off six out of seven straight points to take a 13-9 lead.
  • After a kill from the Golden Eagles looked to flip the momentum, Governors would respond with a kill of their own to negate any Cornerstone comeback as it is 18-13 Jaguars late.
  • The Jaguars would ace the Golden Eagles on set point to win the third set 25-18.
 
Fourth Set: Governors State – 25 Cornerstone – 22
  • Cornerstone and Governors opened the fourth set trading kills as one from the Jaguars saw them take a 5-3 advantage.
  • A quick 3-1 run by Cornerstone saw them tie the set at eight thanks to three straight kills.
  • After taking a 13-11 advantage, Cornerstone would go on a 5-1 run to take a 15-14 lead thanks to Hubert Sliwinski's serves.
  • Once again late in the set, Governors State flipped the momentum to their side as Cornerstone was forced to call a timeout as they are down 19-16.
  • The Golden Eagles wouldn't back down as a Governors error made it 21-20 late in the set.
  • A service ace from Governors State sees them one point away from a fourth set victory over Cornerstone.
  • One final kill from Governors State put the final touch on the match as they took set four 25-22.
 
Game Two Recap – #5 Cornerstone – 3 Jamestown – 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Jamestown – 18
  • Cornerstone jumped out to a 4-2 lead over Jamestown to open play after an Andrew Galanes kill.
  • Patrick Voloch found some space and collected a service ace to make it an 11-9 Golden Eagle lead.
  • Jamestown has stuck around as they collected a service ace of their own to make it 15-14.
  • Hubert Sliwinski picked up a service ace for the Golden Eagles that forced Jamestown into a timeout as Cornerstone leads 20-16.
  • Men's Volleyball took care of business at the end of the first set to win it 25-18.
 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Jamestown – 22
  • Thanks to errors from Jamestown, Cornerstone jumped out to an early 4-2 lead.
  • Kills from Joshua Beaumont and Ernest Broaster forced Jamestown to use their first timeout of the set as they lead 11-6.
  • Cornerstone continued to hold strong in the second set as another kill from Joshua Beaumont made it 15-9.
  • Jamestown has used a 5-1 run to make it a two-point game, 17-15.
  • A big block from Joshua Beaumont and Patrick Voloch made it a 20-16 game let in the second set.
  • Jamestown has used a late 4-1 run to tie the set at 21 after back-to-back kills.
  • David Galanes recorded a kill then a block that forced Jamestown into their final timeout of the set as Cornerstone leads 24-22.
  • One more block by the Golden Eagles help them take a 2-0 match advantage after a 25-22 victory.
 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Jamestown – 17
  • It was a tight contest to open the third set as a kill from Jamestown tied it at three.
  • A 4-0 run by the Golden Eagles saw them take a 10-6 lead as Jamestown called a timeout to regroup.
  • The run continued for Cornerstone before Jamestown found a kill as it is now 13-7 in the third set.
  • David Galanes recorded a kill and then Ernest Broaster recorded an ace as the Golden Eagles lead late 18-10.
  • Ernest Broaster put the Golden Eagles three points away from a 3-0 sweep of Jamestown, 22-14.
  • Joshua Beaumont and David Galanes ended the match in style with a block to win the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
