GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Volleyball returned home for the first time in three weeks and came away with a quick 3-0 sweep of Aquinas. Despite being down early in two of the three sets, the Golden Eagles used Aquinas' bad attacking day to their advantage in their victory.
Ernest Broaster led the way with 16.5 total points for Cornerstone to help them improve to 16-4 (8-1) on the year. Men's Volleyball will honor their nine seniors on Friday, March 21 before their matchup against #3 Lawrence Tech at 7 p.m.
Game One Recap – #5 Cornerstone – 3 Aquinas – 0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Aquinas - 18
- Aquinas opened the first set on a quick 3-0 run thanks to three straight kills.
- The Saints have continued to frustrate the Golden Eagles early in the set as back-to-back errors from Cornerstone made it 8-5.
- Cornerstone has rattled off four-straight points to take a 12-10 lead over Aquinas thanks to a Hubert Sliwinski service ace.
- It has continued to favor the Golden Eagles late as back-to-back errors from the Saints made it 18-13.
- The errors continued to pile up for Aquinas as two more made it 22-16 late.
- Ernest Broaster recorded the final three kills of the set to help Cornerstone win 25-18.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Aquinas – 13
- Aquinas and Cornerstone traded points to open the second set as a block by the Saints made it a 3-3 game.
- A 5-1 run by Cornerstone saw them extend their lead 8-4 after an Ernest Broaster service ace and kill.
- It has continued to be all Cornerstone in the second set as a 4-0 run saw them extend their lead 15-6 after back-to-back blocks from David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont.
- David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski recorded back-to-back kills to make it a 21-9 Cornerstone lead late.
- One last error by the Saints gave the Golden Eagles a 25-13 set two victory.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Aquinas – 18
- Aquinas has jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead over Cornerstone to open the third set.
- The Golden Eagles called their first timeout of the set as three straight Cornerstone errors made it an 8-3 Aquinas lead.
- Fresh out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles used a 5-1 run to make it a 9-8 game thanks to kills from David Galanes and Patrick Voloch.
- Aquinas continued to hold an advantage over the Golden Eagles as a kill made it 12-10.
- Cornerstone found their first lead of the set after a 4-1 run made it 14-13 thanks to four kills by the Golden Eagles.
- After a quick Aquinas run, the Golden Eagles said no more as the Saints were forced to call one of their timeouts as Cornerstone leads late 19-17.
- Cornerstone has continued to pull away from the Saints as a kill from David Galanes made it 22-18.
- Aquinas sent their final attack out of the boundary for an error to give Cornerstone a 25-18 set three victory and 3-0 sweep.
