GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Volleyball honored their seniors before their match against Lawrence Tech. In a heavyweight battle between two powerhouses, Lawrence Tech got the best of the Golden Eagles 3-1. It was as even as a match it could get as Lawrence Tech had 49 kills compared to CU 46, they had 48 assists to CU's 45, they had 46 digs to CU's 41 but for the second straight time the Blue Devils did just enough to win. Men's Volleyball falls to 16-5 (7-2) on the year as they will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon against #2 Saint Xavier and #RV Oakland City starting at 1:00 p.m.
Game One Recap – #4 Lawrence Tech – 3 Cornerstone – 1 (20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 24-26)
First Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 20
- Cornerstone and Lawrence Tech opened the first set with back-to-back kills as one from Joshua Beaumont knotted it at two.
- Back-to-back errors from Lawrence Tech helped Cornerstone take an 8-7 advantage as the first set continued to be back-and-forth.
- A solo block from Joshua Beaumont was followed by a kill from Andrew Galanes to make it a 12-11 game.
- The game of small runs continued as a Lawrence Tech error made it 16-16 halfway through the first set.
- The first big run of the game belonged to Lawrence Tech as the Golden Eagles called their first timeout of the set as they found themselves down 19-16.
- The Golden Eagles continued to stick around as back-to-back kills from David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont made it a 21-20 Lawrence Tech lead late.
- The frontline has proved to be a big difference late in the first set as back-to-back blocks on Golden Eagle attacks made it 24-20 and would later be followed by one more Golden Eagle error to help Lawrence Tech win set one 25-20.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 16
- Cornerstone jumped out to a 5-2 lead thanks to back-to-back service aces from Kyi Jagorin.
- A kill from Patrick Voloch helped Cornerstone extend their lead 8-5 over Lawrence Tech.
- A 3-0 run that was highlighted by kills from Joshua Beaumont and Andrew Galanes forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout as the Golden Eagles lead 12-7.
- The Blue Devils has slowly chipped away at the Golden Eagle lead as a service ace made it 14-11.
- The Golden Eagles responded with a 3-0 run of their own that forced Lawrence Tech into their final timeout after a big block followed by a service ace from David Galanes made it 17-11
- The aces kept coming in the second set for the Golden Eagles as one from Hubert Sliwinski made it 20-13.
- Cornerstone finished the second set on a high note with a loud kill off the swing of David Galanes to win the second set 25-16.
Third Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 23
- A kill from David Galanes knotted the third set up at three as the match continued to go back-and-forth early.
- Back-to-back kills from Lawrence Tech saw them take an 8-6 advantage over the Golden Eagles before an Ernest Broaster kill made it 8-7.
- It continued to be a tight contest as a kill from Patrick Voloch was then followed by a block from Voloch and Joshua Beaumont to force Lawrence Tech into a timeout as it is 14-13 Blue Devils.
- The Golden Eagles took a 16-15 lead over Lawrence Tech thanks to a kill from David Galanes.
- A miscommunication by the Golden Eagles forced them into a timeout as Lawrence Tech now leads 18-16 late in the third set.
- Lawrence Tech used a late kill to make it 21-17 but Brunno Peres would respond with one of his own to make it 21-18.
- Cornerstone continued to chip away at Lawrence Tech's lead as a kill from Brunno Peres and David Galanes made it 22-21 late.
- Lawrence Tech put the Golden Eagles away with a kill to win set three 25-23.
Fourth Set: Lawrence Tech – 26 Cornerstone - 24
- For the fourth straight set, the match started off close as kill from Brunno Peres made it 3-3.
- Lawrence Tech has used a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead over Cornerstone thanks to multiple kills.
- Back-to-back kills from Brunno Peres made it an 11-10 Lawrence Tech lead.
- Kills from Ernest Broaster and David Galanes tied the set at 14 as the match continued to be a tight contest.
- The errors continued to pile up on both sides, but the match remained tied as it is 17-17.
- Kills were traded between the Golden Eagles and Blue Devils as it is 21-21 late.
- Lawrence Tech was the first to 24 as the Golden Eagles called a timeout to regroup as they found themselves down 24-23 after an error.
- The Blue Devils did just enough late as they used a Golden Eagle error to take the fourth set 26-24.
