GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Volleyball returned to action with their final two nonconference matches of the year against #2 Saint Xavier and #RV Oakland City. The Cougars got the best of the Golden Eagles 3-1 in a game that saw them dominate all-around. The Golden Eagles responded well in game two beating Oakland City 3-1. Men's Volleyball now moves to 17-6 on the year as they hit the road for a matchup against Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday, March 28 for their next conference match.
Game One Recap – #2 Saint Xavier – 3 Cornerstone – 1 (19-25, 20-25, 29-27, 21-25)
First Set: Saint Xavier – 25 Cornerstone - 19
- Saint Xavier jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to two kills and a service ace to open the first set.
- The Golden Eagles have fought back, using the Cougars errors to make it a 6-5 game.
- A block and kill from David Galanes helped Cornerstone tie the first set at nine as it remained close early.
- A kill and service ace from Saint Xavier saw them extend their lead 14-11 over the Golden Eagles as momentum favors the Cougars.
- It continued to favor the Cougars late but a kill from David Galanes made it 18-14. Cornerstones fourth kill of the set.
- The attack of the Cougars has continued to be a problem for the Golden Eagles as their 16th kill of the set made it 22-17.
- Saint Xavier put the final touch of the first set with one last kill to take it 25-19 over the Golden Eagles.
Second Set: Saint Xavier – 25 Cornerstone - 20
- The second set opened with Cornerstone and Saint Xavier trading points as an error from the Cougars tied it at three.
- Three straight errors by the Golden Eagles helped Saint Xavier take a 9-6 advantage early in the second set.
- The errors continued to pile up for Cornerstone as they called their first timeout of the set as Saint Xavier leads 13-7.
- A block from Saint Xavier put the Golden Eagles in a 17-11 hole late in the second set.
- Momentum has flipped in favor of the Golden Eagles as a 6-2 run forced Saint Xavier into a timeout as it is now 19-17.
- Cornerstone cut it to one 20-19, but Saint Xavier would respond with a 3-0 run to force the Golden Eagles into their final timeout as they now lead 23-19.
- One final block from Saint Xavier helped them take set two over Cornerstone 25-20.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 29 Saint Xavier - 27
- The third set opened to a 3-3 tie thanks to errors from both teams.
- It continued to be a tight contest early in the third set as a kill from Saint Xavier made it 9-8.
- Saint Xavier called their first timeout of the set thanks to a service ace from Brunno Peres made it a 12-11 Cornerstone advantage.
- A big block from Joshua Beaumon and Andrew Galanes was followed by a Patrick Voloch service ace to force Saint Xavier into their final timeout as the Golden Eagles lead 17-15.
- Kills from Brunno Peres and Hubert Sliwinksi have helped Cornerstone extend their lead late 22-18.
- Saint Xavier has used a late rally to force Cornerstone to call a timeout and regroup late in the third set. Cornerstone continued to lead 23-21.
- The Cougars have fought their way back to force extra points as a kill tied it at 24.
- David Galanes would record a kill to tie the set at 26 as neither team has budged.
- A kick save by Patrick Voloch kept the ball in play and David Galanes put the final touch on the set with a solo block to force a fourth set with a 29-27 victory.
Fourth Set: Saint Xavier – 25 Cornerstone - 21
- David Galanes would record a kill off the block to make it a 4-3 game in favor of the Golden Eagles.
- It continued to remain close in the fourth set as a kill from Joshua Beaumont knotted it at eight.
- Saint Xavier used a kill to take a 15-14 lead over Cornerstone halfway through the set.
- The momentum has favored the Cougars late as three straight kills made it a 19-17 match late in the fourth.
- Both teams would not back down as a block from Hubert Sliwinski made it 22-20 as David Galanes would follow with an ace to make it 22-21.
- Saint Xavier closed the set with three straight points and a final point ace to win the set 25-21 over Cornerstone.
Game Two Recap – #10 Cornerstone – 3 #RV Oakland City – 1 (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Oakland City - 19
- The first set opened with both teams trading kills as one from David Galanes made it 3-3.
- A kill from Ernest Broaster and a service ace from David Galanes helped Cornerstone maintain a 9-7 lead over Oakland City.
- The Golden Eagles continued to find kills in the first set as ones from Joshua Beaumont and David Galanes made it 14-10.
- Ernest Broaster has found his groove as a kill from him made it 20-15 Cornerstone late in the first set.
- A Patrick Voloch service ace put the Golden Eagles two points away from a first set victory.
- Joshua Beaumont put the final touch on the first set with a kill to win it 25-19 for Cornerstone.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Oakland City - 15
- Oakland City jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to back-to-back kills.
- A kill from Ernest Broaster and Hubert Sliwinski helped Cornerstone take a 6-5 lead over the Mighty Oaks.
- The kills kept piling up for the Golden Eagles as a couple more from Andrew Galanes and David Galanes forced Oakland City into a timeout as it is now 9-5.
- An Ernest Broaster service ace helped silence the Oakland City players as it is now a 15-11 Cornerstone advantage.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles as another service ace from Ernest Broaster made it 20-11.
- Andrew Galanes and Ernest Broaster put the final touches on the second set with kills to win it 25-15.
Third Set: Oakland City – 25 Cornerstone - 19
- It has been all Oakland City to start the third set as they have jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to some blocks and Golden Eagle errors.
- It continued to be in favor of the Mighty Oaks as another block saw them extend their lead 8-3 over the Golden Eagles.
- The Golden Eagles have seen the momentum favor them as a kill from Hubert Sliwinski made it 9-8.
- Back-to-back kills from the Mighty Oaks saw them extend their lead 15-11 over the Golden Eagles as Cornerstone called a timeout to regroup.
- Oakland City used a big block to make it a 19-13 game late as they feel all the momentum late on their side.
- The Mighty Oaks forced a fourth set after their 25-19 set three victory.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Oakland City - 21
- Service errors from both teams knotted the fourth set at three to open the set.
- A kill from Ernest Broaster helped Cornerstone take a 7-6 lead early over Oakland City.
- Thanks to errors from the Golden Eagles, the Mighty Oaks have taken a 13-12 lead as Cornerstone called a timeout to regroup.
