Men's Volleyball unable to get anything going in a 3-0 loss to #10 Benedictine Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – Men's Volleyball had their first of two games in Arizona as they took on #10 Benedictine Mesa to start spring break. It was not the normal Golden Eagle team tonight as they were swept 3-0 by the Redhawks, their first sweep of the season. Nothing got going for the Golden Eagles as they were held to .184 on offense with Benedictine recording 26 digs on defense for the night. Men's Volleyball drops to 13-2 on the year as they will be right back in action tomorrow night against OUAZ at 8 p.m. EST
 
Game Recap – #20 Benedictine Mesa – 3 #5 Cornerstone – 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-17)
 
First Set: Benedictine – 25 Cornerstone – 20
  • Cornerstone opened the first set on a 5-2 run thanks to a kill from Ernest Broaster and multiple Benedictine errors.
  • The Redhawks stormed right back, using a 5-1 run to take an 8-7 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
  • A kill from Ernest Broaster and a service ace from Brunno Peres helped Cornerstone retake the lead 11-9.
  • Benedictine used their second 5-1 run of the set as this time it helped them take a 15-14 lead before Andrew Galanes would shut the run down with a kill to tie it at 15.
  • Cornerstone was forced to use their first timeout of the set as three straight Redhawk points saw them take a 18-15 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles had no answer for the attack of the Redhawks as another kill made it 22-18 late.
  • Benedictine took the first set over the Golden Eagles in high fashion thanks to a service ace, 25-20.
 
Second Set: Benedictine – 25 Cornerstone – 18
  • Benedictine jumped out to a 4-1 advantage over the Golden Eagles thanks to back-to-back kills.
  • Andrew Galanes recorded a kill, and Benedictine would record an error, but Cornerstone continued to trail 8-6.
  • The Golden Eagles have not been able to find any rhythm in this one as a service ace saw Benedictine extend their lead 14-8.
  • Another Benedictine service ace made it 20-13 late in the second set.
  • The Redhawks are one set away from a 3-0 sweep of Cornerstone as they win the second set 25-18.
 
Third Set: Benedictine – 25 Cornerstone – 17
  • A solo block from Matthew True and a kill from Hubert Sliwinski helped Cornerstone take an early 5-3 advantage.
  • An 8-1 run by Benedictine forced Cornerstone to use their first timeout as the frustrations have started to mount for the Golden Eagles as they find themselves down 11-6.
  • This time, a 5-0 run by the Redhawks made it 17-8 game as the Golden Eagles continued to struggle.
  • Matthew True and Ernest Broaster tried to start a spark with kills, but Benedictine was not having it as they responded with a kill to make it 21-13.
  • Andrew Galanes recorded back-to-back kills as the Golden Eagles won't go down as it is now 23-17.
  • Cornerstone gets swept for the first time season as they fall in the third and final set 25-17.

.184 – Cornerstone could not find their normal rhythm on offense, hitting .184
33 – Benedictine's defense was the difference in this one as they recorded 26 digs and seven blocks compared to 17 digs and four blocks from Cornerstone
11 – Andrew Galanes was the lone bright spot as he had a team high 11 kills while hitting .526
