Men's Volleyball drops their second straight match in Arizona

 SURPRISE, Ariz. – Men's Volleyball looked to bounced back with a matchup against OUAZ but struggled once again in Arizona falling in straight sets to the Spirit 3-0. Arizona has not been kind to the Golden Eagles as they struggled in their second straight match that saw them get struggle on defense, losing by 11 in the dig margin 38-27. Cornerstone did find their normal rhythm on offense to a .267 hitting percentage but OUAZ did just enough to edge out the Golden Eagles in straight sets. Men's Volleyball will now look to return back to form as conference play resumes on Tuesday, March 11 as they travel to Goshen for a 7 p.m. start time.
 
Game Recap – OUAZ – 3 #5 Cornerstone – 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23)
 
First Set: OUAZ – 25 Cornerstone – 23
  • The first set opened in a back-and-forth affair as a kill from Andrew Galanes made it 4-3 Cornerstone.
  • Three straight Golden Eagle points were highlighted by back-to-back Andrew Galanes service aces to make it 9-5 early.
  • OUAZ has battled right back tie the first set at 10 thanks to a quick 5-1 run.
  • Patrick Voloch and Joshua Beaumont recorded back-to-back kills to extend Cornerstones lead 14-11.
  • OUAZ called their first timeout of the set as back-to-back errors saw the Golden Eagles take a 16-12 advantage.
  • Right out of the timeout, OUAZ scored four straight to tie the match at 16 as Cornerstone called a timeout to regroup.
  • It continued to go back-and-forth late but a service from OUAZ made it 20-18 in favor of the Spirit.
  • The Golden Eagles would call their final timeout of the set down 22-19.
  • Cornerstone would storm right back, thanks to kills from Andrew Galanes and Joshua Beaumont, plus a service ace from Ernest Broaster to tie it at 23.
  • OUAZ ended the first set with a kill and block from Jack Hubbard to win it 25-23.
 
Second Set: OUAZ – 25 Cornerstone - 22
  • Matthew True gave the Golden Eagles an early 4-3 lead to open the second set.
  • It has continued to go back-and-forth in the second set as a kill from Joshua Beaumont made it 9-8 with OUAZ in the lead.
  • Back-to-back attack errors from the Spirit helped Cornerstone tie the match at 12.
  • Joshua Beaumont has helped Cornerstone take a 16-15 advantage with back-to-back kills halfway through the second set.
  • It has continued to remain tight in the second set but a kill from OUAZ forced Cornerstone to use one of their timeouts as the Spirit lead 20-18.
  • Cornerstone has fought back as OUAZ was forced to use one of their timeouts as the game is now 22-21.
  • Three straight kills from the Spirit put the Golden Eagles away 25-22 to take a 2-0 set advantage.
 
Third Set: OUAZ – 25 Cornerstone – 23
  • The third set opened close like the first two as an OUAZ error made it 3-3.
  • The Spirit would use a 4-1 run on Cornerstone to take a 7-4 advantage behind three kills.
  • It continued to favor OUAZ in the third set as back-to-back kills saw them extend their lead 13-9 over Cornerstone.
  • Cornerstone was forced to call one of their timeouts as a 3-0 run fueled by more Spirit kills saw them take a 17-12 advantage late in the third set.
  • OUAZ was the first to 20 for the third straight set as a kill made it 20-16 late.
  • The Golden Eagles wouldn't back down as four straight points tied the match at 20 as OUAZ called a timeout. David Galanes and Ernest Broaster recorded kills in the run.
  • OUAZ has continued to edge out Cornerstone late as a Golden Eagle error made it 24-22.
  • Cornerstone would make one last error to fall to OUAZ in the third set 25-23.

21 – OUAZ had 21 attacking errors on the night compared to 11 Golden Eagle errors but had 11 more kills 46-35 on the match
38 – OUAZ out dug the Golden Eagles 38-27 as defense was the difference in this one
.267 – Cornerstone hit .267 for the match behind Ernest Broaster's 10 kills
