Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball went to battle today as they hosted the Racers of Northwestern Ohio. In the first game of the day the Golden Eagles were stunned early as they fell 10-8. Game two belonged to
McKenna Gilde as she led Cornerstone to a 3-0 win with her seven-strikeout game. The ladies next matchup comes against Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, April 16 starting at 3pm.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 8 UNOH – 10
- UNOH came out of the gates firing as they put together a flurry of hits to post five quick runs in the top of the 1st.
- Moriah Sprague struck first with a double to right field to start off the hits for the home team.
- The Golden Eagles closed out the first inning with three runs of their own thanks to singles from Sam Timmer and Delaney Wilson.
- The Racers continued their hot start to the double-header in the second inning as they added another two runs taking a 7-3 lead.
- Morgan Jenkins smooth swing put a ball up the middle which allowed Cornerstone to set themselves up for a run, yet they trailed 7-4 after the 2nd.
- The Golden Eagles took advantage of some sloppy UNOH defense to set up Moriah Sprague which she turned into a triple down the right field line that allowed Cornerstone to cut the lead to 7-6.
- The Racers found one more run in the 5th inning as they looked to be in control late.
- In the top of the 7th inning the Golden Eagles were forced to make changes as the Racers found two more runs and a 10-6 advantage.
- Despite strong hitting in the final inning the Golden Eagles ran out of steam and fell 10-8 in game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 3 UNOH – 0
- The first inning started much tamer in game two as both teams were held scoreless to start.
- McKenna Gilde kicked off her strong day in the 2nd inning with three strikeouts to neutralize the Racers offense.
- The offense began in the bottom of the 4th inning for the Golden Eagles after Morgan Jenkins and Moriah Sprague reached bases.
- Sam Timmer and Alexis Ashbay both found big hits for the home team that drove in runs as Cornerstone took a 3-0 lead.
- Two more strikeouts for McKenna Gilde was the story of the 5th as Cornerstone was cruising.
- The Golden Eagles closed out the game with no damage as they secured game two with a 3-0 win.
By the Numbers:
11 – Cornerstone outscored UNOH 11 to 10 through both games.
5 – The Racers were quick when on base as they stole five times compared to Cornerstone's three.
10 – The pitching crew for the Golden Eagles tallied 10 strikeouts on the day.
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles next test comes on the road against Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, April 16 for a pair of games starting at 3pm.
