Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball battled to a double-header sweep over the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn. Game one Cornerstone dominated from the mound and the plate on their way to an 8-5 victory. In the second game the Golden Eagles had to fight but ultimately came away with a 6-5 win. The ladies continue their busy week with a matchup against Defiance on Friday, April 18
th for another double-header starting at 1pm.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 8 Michigan-Dearborn – 5
- Cornerstone came out of the game with instant pressure but could not convert in the top of the inning.
- Alyssa Braam started off her strong performance with two quick strikeouts to end the first.
- Michigan-Dearborn stunned the Golden Eagles with a two-shot homer in the second inning, but Cornerstone did not waver as they responded with three straight strikeouts to close out the 2nd inning.
- It did not take long for Moriah Sprague to return the favor in the top of the third with her own two-shot home run to tie the Golden Eagles up fast.
- Sam Timmer and Emma Boonstra doubles capped off a strong inning as the Golden Eagles took a 4-2 lead.
- The Wolverines tightened up the contest in the 4th inning to make the game 4-3.
- Sam Timmer struck again this time in the top of the 6th to drive in another run for the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone stumbled in the bottom of the inning as they allowed Michigan-Dearborn to tie the ball game at 5-5.
- The trio of Morgan Jenkins, Anna Griffioen, and Moriah Sprague came up clutch to close out the game with three more runs as the Golden Eagles secured the 8-5 victory in game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 6 Michigan-Dearborn – 5
- Game two began with quick putouts for both sides as it was scoreless after the first inning.
- Alexis Ashbay and Dylan Holmes combined for the first run of the game as the Golden Eagles looked to earn the sweep.
- Despite multiple strikeouts in the bottom of the 2nd inning the Wolverines fought to earn a run and tie the ball game at 1-1.
- The Golden Eagles once again found themselves down multiple runs after strong hitting from Michigan-Dearborn with the score at 3-1.
- In the top of the 4th Cornerstone relied on Maddy Chatman as she doubled to secure a 4-3 lead.
- Paige Liddell doubled to lead off the top of the 6th inning which set up Anna Griffioen to drive in multiple runs as Cornerstone extended their lead to 6-3 headed into the final inning.
- Michigan-Dearborn looked to make a massive comeback in the last inning after punching in two runs, but Alexis Ashbay found the last out on a special catch to down the Wolverines and complete the sweep at 6-5.
By the Numbers:
18 – The pitchers for the Golden Eagles combined for 18 strikeouts across both games.
3 – Throughout both games there were three home runs.
21 – Cornerstone secured the sweep despite leaving 21 runners on base combined through both contests.

The Golden Eagles next test comes on the road against Defiance on Friday, April 18
th at 1pm and 3pm.
