Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball traveled to Defiance for their second double-header of the week. The Golden Eagles came away with another conference sweep thanks to two strong team efforts. The ladies have a quick turnaround as they prepare for another double-header on Saturday April 19 against Cleary.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 8 Defiance – 3
- Moriah Sprague kicked off her strong game with a smooth swing and brought in the first run of the contest early for the Golden Eagles.
- Despite the Cornerstone quick 2-0 lead after the top of the 1st inning the Yellow Jackets responded immediately with three runs of their own to take the lead at 3-2.
- Alyssa Braam commanded the mound in the second inning with three strikeouts to slow the Defiance offense.
- Cornerstone continued to rely on Moriah Sprague as she doubled to set up the Golden Eagles for multiple runs in the 3rd inning as they regained the lead up 4-3.
- Defiance saw their defense struggle which opened Cornerstone to gain an easy run on a pass ball for a 5-3 lead.
- The strikeouts continued to add up for Cornerstone as they cruised through the 5th inning up 6-3.
- Anna Griffioen and Moriah Sprague both found doubles into center field extend the Cornerstone lead once again at 7-3 after the 6th inning.
- Alyssa Braam closed out her strong performance with 13 strikeouts as the Golden Eagles secured a strong 8-3 win in game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 13 Defiance – 6
- Game two started quickly for the Golden Eagles with strong at bats which allowed them to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- Cornerstone continued to connect with pitches but could not convert as the game remained at 1-0 at the end of the 3rd inning.
- Moriah Sprague and Sam Timmer both singled to lead off the 4th inning, which set up the Golden Eagles in scoring position.
- Cornerstone brought in two runs thanks to Taylor Zwagerman's strike into right field which boosted the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 lead.
- A strong trio of battles at the plate from Sam Timmer, Delaney Wilson, and Alexis Ashbay resulted in three consecutive runs scored for Cornerstone in the top of the 5th.
- Moriah Sprague continued her stellar day with another double which brought in 2 runs for Cornerstone to kick off the 6th inning.
- Defiance struggles on the defensive side allowed for Cornerstone to run through the lineup which they converted into a commanding 11-0 lead.
- The Golden Eagles tested out a pitching change which worked in favor of Defiance as they scored 5 straight runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
- The Yellow Jackets sloppy defense continued as multiple errors piled up which Cornerstone turned into another run now leading 12-5.
- Both teams traded runs in the final inning of the game as Cornerstone secured the double-header sweep over Defiance.

7 – Cornerstone left seven runners on base in each game today.
6 – The Golden Eagles had fire power from the plate as they converted six doubles across both contests.
18 – Cornerstone dominated from the mound once again as they came away with 18 strikeouts on the day.

The Golden Eagles head home for the next match up against Cleary on Saturday, April 19 for a double-header starting at 1pm.
