Softball adds another sweep as they extend their win streak to nine after battle with Concordia

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Softball battled with Concordia on their trip to Ann Arbor in a tale of two stories. Game one was swift as the Golden Eagles ran away with a 11-1 victory in five innings. The second game showed to be more of a test as it took nine innings to decide a winner, but the Golden Eagles came away with a 11-6 win and sweep. Cornerstone takes a small break before hitting the road for a double-header against Siena Heights on Wednesday, April 23 for a 3:30p.m. start.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 11 Concordia – 1
  • Both teams started out slowly in game one as the first two innings went scoreless after strong defensive showings.
  • Concordia broke the seal first in the bottom of the 3rd inning which gave them the first score of the game and a 1-0 lead.
  • Anna Griffioen continued to shine at the plate as she kicked off the 4th with a double into center field.
  • A trio of hits from Moriah Sprague, Sam Timmer, and Dylan Holmes boosted the Golden Eagles to their first lead of the contest at 2-1.
  • The flood gates opened for Cornerstone in the top of the 5th with a Maddy Chatman homer into left field.
  • The Golden Eagles took advantage of poor defense to set up Alexis Ashbay to send in two more runs with Cornerstone still not finished.
  • The next strike came from Taylor Zwagerman with a single that caused havoc and made the score 7-1 as the Cardinals still only held two outs in the inning.
  • Paige Liddell singled into left center for the away squad to continue driving in runs.
  • Morgan Jenkins closed out the massive 5th inning with a home run that put Cornerstone up 11-1 and threatened Concordia of ending game one early.
  • The ladies defense held up strong in the bottom of the 5th to close out game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 11 Concordia – 6
  • Game two started off much quicker as Morgan Jenkins and Alayna Meade both singled to break down the Concordia defense and punch in the first run of the game.
  • Paige Liddell doubled the Cornerstone lead with a solo shot homer in the top of the 2nd inning to keep the offense moving early.
  • The Golden Eagles surrendered a run, but it did not take long for Dylan Holmes to answer right back with a two RBI double to extend the ladies lead in the top of the 3rd inning.
  • A flurry of singles in the top of the 4th inning allowed for Alayna Meade and Dylan Holmes to each drive in a run with the Golden Eagles on top 6-1.
  • Concordia slowly inched their way back into the contest as they finally tied the ball game up at 6-6 in the bottom of the 6th inning to make things interesting late.
  • Cornerstone threatened Concordia in the 7th inning with runners in great position but could not find a way to score as this game was headed to extras.
  • Taylor Zwagerman stepped up when Cornerstone needed it most with a solo shot homer to lead off the 9th inning and see the first run of extra innings come in.
  • Three straight singles from Anna Griffioen, Alayna Meade, and Sam Timmer took the wind right out of the Cardinals sails as they saw a 10-6 Cornerstone advantage.
  • Alexis Ashbay closed out the contest with the final base hit and RBI that secured Cornerstone a 11-6 win and a double-header sweep.
By the Numbers:
4 – Cornerstone saw four homers today all coming from separate players (Morgan Jenkins, Maddy Chatman, Taylor Zwagerman, and Paige Liddell).
22 – Two games of 11 runs each was the story as the Golden Eagles bats were on fire.
17 – Despite stellar hitting the ladies managed to leave 17 runners on base through both games.
