Softball adds their fifth sweep in a row as they take both games against Siena Heights

Adrian, Mich. – Softball went to work once again in another double-header this time against Siena Heights. The Golden Eagles saw both games go to eight innings and found a victory in each with clutch play from all over the field. Anna Griffioen tallied another home run on the day that proved to be crucial in the game two win. The ladies will take their momentum back home for a battle with Lawrence Tech on Friday, April 25th to close out regular season play. 
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 9 Siena Heights – 8
  • Morgan Jenkins led off well for the Golden Eagles with a double, but Cornerstone could not capitalize at the top of the 1st
  • The Golden Eagles struck first with a Taylor Zwagerman single that brought in the first run of the game in the 2nd inning. 
  • The Saints battled back fast with a four-run inning to answer Cornerstone.
  • The defense stiffened for both squads in the 3rd with three quick outs on both sides of the inning. 
  • A Morgan Jenkins triple and Taylor Zwagerman double told the story in the 4th inning as the Golden Eagles stormed back to tie the game at 4-4. 
  • Siena Heights was able to respond once again with a run in the bottom of the 4th as they led 5-4. 
  • Three straight walks for the Golden Eagles set up Anna Griffioen which she turned into a three RBI double and boosted Cornerstone to a 7-5 lead. 
  • The Saints found three more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take an 8-7 lead and force Cornerstone to make a move in the top of the last inning.
  • Sam Timmer and Alexis Ashbay both singled to cap off a game saving inning and tie the game at 8-8. 
  • Maddy Chatman and Moriah Sprague took advantage of errors by Siena Heights which helped them punch in a run to lead 9-8 headed into the bottom of the 8th.
  • Cornerstone tallied their 10th victory in a row thanks to another strong team effort as they closed out the bottom of the 8th strong to win 9-8 in extras. 
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 5 Siena Heights – 3
  • Game two started out tame with an Anna Griffioen single but the Golden Eagles could not turn it into any runs after the 1st inning. 
  • Cornerstone knocked on the door once again in the second inning after a Paige Liddell double but once again came away scoreless as the game remained at 0-0. 
  • Siena Heights took advantage of an error which they turned into two quick runs to strike first in game two with a 2-0 lead after the 3rd inning. 
  • Multiple sacrifice plays in the top of the 5th inning finally allowed Cornerstone to post a run as they still trailed 2-1. 
  • The next big play of the game came from the Saints with a triple that set up Siena Heights and gave them a 3-1 advantage headed into the final inning. 
  • Anna Griffioen checked her bat, and it was still on fire as she homered to drive in two runs and tie the ball game at 3-3. 
  • Alexis Ashbay and Sam Timmer hooked up for a bottom of the 7th inning double-play that kept Cornerstone in the game as Siena Heights tried to send their runner home but was picked off at the plate.
  • The massive momentum shift kick started the Cornerstone offense in the top of the 8th as they came away with a flurry of singles that Alayna Meade capped off with the second score of the inning with the Golden Eagles now up 5-3. 
  • McKenna Gilde found a strikeout in the final inning to wrap it up and give Cornerstone their 11th victory and 5th sweep in a row.  
By the Numbers:
14 – The crew from the mound tallied 14 strikeouts across both games. 
8 – Eight was the magic number today as both games entered extra innings and were decided in the 8th for each game. 
11 – Cornerstone completes yet another sweep to make it 11 wins in a row and 5 sweeps straight.

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles head home for their final double-header of the regular season on Friday, April 25 for a matchup against Lawrence Tech at 4pm and 6pm.
