Baseball splits against Siena Heights to open their final weekend of the regular season

ADRIAN, Mich. – Baseball opened a weekend road trip with a double-header against Siena Heights and came away with a split. Steve Hoeksema and late clutch hitting helped the Golden Eagles take game one 5-4. Matthew Kindley powered the offense in game two but a tough ninth inning saw Siena Heights score four and walk off the Golden Eagles 6-5. Baseball will now have one final double-header tomorrow afternoon as they take on Madonna starting at 1 p.m.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 5 Siena Heights – 4
  • Siena Heights used two quick triples to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles with one out. The Saints would tack on two more on a double to extend their lead 3-0 before one last run on a sac fly to make it 4-0 after the first.
  • Siena Heights continued to lead the Golden Eagles 4-0 after three innings of play.
  • With two outs, Jack Gagliardi would come through with a double to get the Golden Eagles on the board. John Caliendo and Michael Ruiz would follow with singles to make it a 4-3 game after the top of the fourth.
  • Steve Hoeksema has settled in nicely after the first inning as he kept the Saints off the board in the fifth with a strikeout.
  • Drew Goodman opened the sixth with a double and Corbin Westerkamp would follow with a single to make it first and third. A Westerkamp steal led to a Saints error to tie the game at four in the sixth.
  • Matthew Kindley led off the top of the seventh with a hit by pitch to reach base. With two outs, Drew Goodman would single into center, but the centerfielder misplayed the ball as it rolled to the wall leading to Kindley scoring to give Cornerstone a 5-4 lead.
  • Steve Hoeksema would work a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh thanks to back-to-back grounders to Michael Ruiz at short to steal game one from Siena Heights 5-4.

Game Two Recap: Siena Heights – 6 Cornerstone – 5
  • Cornerstone and Siena Heights remained scoreless through the first two innings of play as Connor Comiskey has kept the Saints quiet.

  • Bobby Kelly has been great out of the bullpen for the Golden Eagles as he has recorded a couple strikeouts in a couple innings of play as Cornerstone continues to lead 3-1 after the sixth.
  • John Caliendo led off the seventh with a double to get into scoring position. With two outs and Caliendo still on second, Matthew Kindley would hit a two-run homerun to extend the Golden Eagle lead 5-1 over Siena Heights.
  • Bobby Kelly worked around a first and third jam with back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a 5-1 game after the eighth.
  • The Golden Eagle error comes back to hurt as two-out single made it 5-2 after the eighth inning.
  • Hit by pitch, double, single, and double to start off the bottom of the ninth for Siena Heights as they made it a 5-4 game as they have runners on second and third with no outs. A sac fly would tie it at five and the next batter would follow with a single to walk off the Golden Eagles 6-5.
