Softball splits a pair of games to open up WHAC Tournament play

Sylvania, Ohio – Softball kicked off their WHAC Tournament opener with a victory over hometown rival Aquinas taking it 6-3. In the second matchup of the night Cornerstone faced UNOH where they saw an extra inning 8-4 loss. It took 12 innings to decide, and this ended the 14-game win streak of the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone is not out of it yet as they face Concordia on Thursday, May 1 in a must win to keep their post season run alive.

Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 6 Aquinas – 3
  • The Golden Eagles picked up right where they left off in the top of the 1st inning with a Moriah Sprague single that set up Sam Timmer for a two-shot bomb to take an early WHAC Tournament lead.
  • Cornerstone saw danger in the bottom of the first, but Paige Liddell cleaned up well with a smooth play to secure the final out with the score at 2-0 headed to the 2nd inning.
  • Alexis Ashbay doubled to keep the offense rolling in the top of the 2nd and followed it up with a sacrifice bunt to be in strong scoring position once again.
  • The Golden Eagles saw another run come in after Maddy Chatman put the ball in play as they led 3-0 after the 2nd inning.
  • Moriah Sprague found her second single of the day to help kick start another scoring inning for the Golden Eagles in the 3rd
  • Cornerstone then saw Alexis Ashbay single to help drive in a run and Taylor Zwagerman sacrifice fly find the second run of the inning as the Golden Eagles led 5-0 after three.
  • Morgan Jenkins proved her speed in the bottom of the 4th inning as she stole two bases after reaching first which helped Cornerstone drive in another run with outs still to give.
  • The ladies ended the inning with a 6-0 lead despite seeing Moriah Sprague and Sam Timmer both tally singles.
  • Cornerstone found themselves in a tough position on defense as the bases were loaded but weathered the storm well only allowing one run in the inning.
  • Both teams cruised through the 5th inning with no damage as Cornerstone still led 6-1.
  • The Golden Eagles entered the top of the 7th inning needing only three outs to close out their first WHAC Tournament win which they did only after a shaky two run inning closing it out 6-3.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Northwestern Ohio – 8
  • Cornerstone got stunned early as the Racers put together a three-run homer to take a lighting fast 3-0 lead.
  • McKenna Gilde bounced back fast with two strikeouts to close out a slow top of the 1st start for the Golden Eagles.
  • Morgan Jenkins kicked off the top of the lineup well with a single and a stolen base for Cornerstone.
  • The bases were loaded for the Golden Eagles but strong pitching from Northwestern Ohio told the story as the score remained 3-0 in favor of the Racers at the end of the 1st inning.
  • The Racers managed to keep the momentum to start the 2nd with another run scored.
  • Paige Liddell helped Cornerstone get some momentum of their own started in the bottom of the 2nd with a single that UNOH followed with multiple walks and a wild pitch as they scored one run with an out yet to give.
  • The Golden Eagles punched in two runs in the bottom of the 2nd to cut the UNOH lead in half with strong at bats from across the lineup.
  • Alexis Ashbay doubled to kick off the 3rd inning for the Golden Eagles, but they followed it up with three straight outs as the score remained 4-2.
  • Cornerstone continued to find connections but was not able to split gaps with three consecutive ground outs in the 4th
  • In the bottom of the 5th inning the Golden Eagles found themselves with the bases loaded once again and it was the same story as they simply could not drive in a run with the game still at 4-2.
  • With two innings left to find some runs Morgan Jenkins tripled to lead off the bottom of the 6th inning for Cornerstone.
  • Anna Griffioen grounded out to give Cornerstone their first run since the 2nd inning of the game as they traveled into the final inning of the game only down 4-3.
  • Cornerstone saw Alyssa Braam enter the game and help secure all three outs in the top of the 7th inning.
  • Maddy Chatman had a massive at bat which she battled for a single that secured the long-awaited game tying run for the Golden Eagles to force extra innings.
  • Both defenses stepped up in the 8th inning with quick outs on both sides of the ball.
  • Three straight innings of no damage as both teams continued to search for any advantage in the game.
  • The Racers took control in the 12th inning thanks to a massive four run stretch as they led 8-2.
  • The Golden Eagles could not respond as they put three grounders into play but found no success with the game going final at the end of the 12th inning.
By the Numbers:
14 – Cornerstone sees their impressive 14 game win streak end against the same team they got it started against in UNOH.
22 – The Golden Eagles simply could not convert and drive in runs as they left 22 runners on base across both games.
5 – The ladies saw five stolen bases on the day with Morgan Jenkins collecting three of those.

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles will look to keep their post season run alive on Thursday, May 1 against Concordia as they will need to win out on the loser's side of the bracket.
