Sylvania, Ohio – Softball put together two nearly identical games as they defeated Concordia and Indiana Tech both 4-3. In game one
Sam Timmer stepped up when it mattered most with a single that walked off Concordia in a scary elimination game. The second game of the day was decided by one big comeback inning for the Golden Eagles to secure their second win of the day. The ladies await their next opponent for WHAC Tournament play.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Concordia – 3
- It was all defense early for both squads as it was three up and three down in both sides of the 1st inning.
- Allie Lubben commanded the mound well with strikeouts to start both the 2nd and 3rd innings as the game remained scoreless through the top of the 3rd.
- The Golden Eagles offense got moving through Paige Liddell in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a leadoff double into center field.
- Anna Griffioen punched an RBI hit up the center of infield that allowed Cornerstone to find their first run of this must win game.
- Another strikeout in the top of the 5th inning for Allie Lubben told the story as Cornerstone still held a 1-0 lead.
- The big day continued for Paige Liddell with a solo shot homer to double the Golden Eagles lead at the end of the 5th inning.
- Concordia finally broke through in the 6th inning as they cut the Cornerstone lead in half as the Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead headed into the final inning.
- A tough top of the 7th inning set up the Cardinals as they took a 3-2 lead with everything to play for in the bottom of the final inning.
- The nerves got the best of Concordia as they first walked Paige Liddell and then committed an error which allowed her to score and tie the game with outs yet to give.
- The top of the lineup came through with Morgan Jenkins and Anna Griffioen picking up singles to load the bases for Cornerstone.
- Sam Timmer rifled a walk off shot up the middle to secure the Golden Eagles another post season victory and take a huge step closer to a national tournament bid.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Indiana Tech – 3
- Indiana Tech came out of the gates with a double, but Cornerstone tightened up their defense immediately to get through the top of the 1st unharmed.
- Anna Griffioen doubled to kick start the Golden Eagles offense that was followed by an error that set up Cornerstone early.
- Alayna Meade put a deep shot into the outfield to draw first blood on a sacrifice fly for Cornerstone to lead 1-0 after the 1st inning.
- Paige Liddell and Morgan Jenkins both singled in the 2nd but found no joy as the score remained at 1-0.
- The 3rd inning belonged to the Warriors as they punched in a game tying run as the Golden Eagles defense cracked.
- In the top of the 4th inning Indiana Tech found another run off an error as they led 2-1.
- The Warriors slow offensive threat continued in the 5th inning as they extended their lead to 3-1.
- The need for runs set in for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the 5th with a Maddy Chatman leadoff single to get things started.
- Anna Griffioen found her second double of the game to drive in a run for Cornerstone as they cut the lead to 3-2 with outs still to give.
- Cornerstone saw Moriah Sprague double to set up the bases for a prime inning of scoring.
- Sam Timmer and Alayna Meade both put the ball in play to cause chaos for the Indiana Tech defense which allowed Cornerstone to regain the lead at 4-3.
- Cornerstone gathered five ground outs in the final two innings to secure their crucial victory to keep their WHAC Tournament hopes alive.
