Men’s Soccer comes up empty in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Saint Xavier

Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer worked hard for 90 minutes but had nothing to show for it at the end of the match. The Cougars of Saint Xavier managed to find a goal in the first half that was the decider. The Golden Eagles will look to take what they can from the performance in their next matchup against Huntington on Wednesday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m. 
 
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Saint Xavier – 1
 
First Half:
  • The first five minutes of the game belonged to the Cougars who put together a fast pair of shots, but the Golden Eagles defense held strong. 
  • Cornerstone began to put together strong shots with Calvin Curtis and Jake Madak both forcing saves from Saint Xavier.
  • Roberto Gutierrez continued his strong start to the 2025 season in the 11th minute with a crucial save to keep the match scoreless. 
  • The play got physical at the 25-minute mark with Jake Madak earning a yellow card. 
  • A slick move from the Cougars was enough to break the deadlock as they took the lead in the 36th minute of the match. 
  • The halftime score was stuck at 1-0 in favor of Saint Xavier despite a strong effort from the Golden Eagles late on the offensive side of the ball. 
Second Half:
  • Cornerstone started the second half with a renewed energy and nearly saw Steven Stidham find the back of the net, but his shot went wide right. 
  • Calvin Curtis earned the second yellow card of the game as the gritty game continued in the 52nd minute.
  • It only took five more minutes for the Golden Eagles to be given the next yellow card of the game this time to Shane Renshaw
  • Isaac Wood worked his way through multiple defenders in a strong run, but the finish still was not enough as the Cougars held the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock. 
  • Game management came into play for the away squad as they were able to control enough to keep Cornerstone scoreless in the 1-0 defeat for the Golden Eagles. 
By The Numbers
It was plenty physical on the field today as Cornerstone tallied four yellow cards on the day. 
Roberto Gutierrez produced six saves in the match. 
The Cougars took 18 shots in the game compared to the Golden Eagles 8. 
 
What's Next
The Golden Eagles have a long wait until their next match coming on Wednesday, September 10th at 4:00 p.m. against #RV Huntington.
