Men’s Soccer Knocks out the Fighting Saints

Joliet, Ill. – Men's Soccer (1-2) traveled down to the University of St. Francis (0-3-1) to take on the Fighting Saints. Calvin Curtis opened up the scoring for either side in the 20th minute to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the first half. Tyler Corstange got his own opportunity to build Cornerstone's lead with a penalty shot in which he was successful to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0. The night would end with Cornerstone advancing to 2-2 on the year with a 2-0 victory over the Fighting Saints. The Golden Eagles will return to Grand Rapids next week to take on the Knights of Calvin University just down the road from Cornerstone. That match will take place September 16th, inside of the newly renovated Zuidema Soccer Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich. at 7 p.m.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 University of St. Francis – 0

First Half:

  • Within the 1st minute of play Cornerstone has an opportunity on goal, thanks to a freekick by Steven Stidham which forces a save by the Fighting Saints.

  • Another freekick, but for the Fighting Saints sees another shot in the game. Unfortunately for St. Francis the shot goes high above the crossbar.

  • Cornerstone's Ethan Hehl takes the first corner-kick of the game which finds its way to the head of Isaac Wood, unfortunately the header goes wide.

  • A shot from Ethan Hehl looks promising in the 16th minute of play, but it goes just wide of the goal.

  • Calvin Curtis opens up the scoresheet for Cornerstone with a cut inside and a shot with his left foot, which curls into the left-side of the goal to make it 1-0 Golden Eagles.

  • St. Francis earn themselves a corner kick with 5 minutes to play in the first half, but no clear opportunity comes from it and Cornerstone are awarded a goal kick.

  • The 1st half of play closes with the Golden Eagles still up just 1-0.

Second Half:

  • The second half begins and Cornerstone gets a corner-kick early but the opportunity is squandered.

  • Another corner-kick for Cornerstone results in a foul from St. Francis on Tyler Corstange. The foul results in a penalty shot opportunity for Tyler Corstange, who puts it in the bottom right corner out of the goalkeeper's reach to make the score 2-0 in the 52nd minute of play. 

  • Two more shots from Calvin Curtis raises the pressure on St. Francis's goalkeeper who pushes both away in the 56th minute.

  • Jake Madak commits a tough foul in the 60th minute, which grants him the first yellow card of the day.

  • The Golden Eagles escape a dangerous situation with just under 30 minutes left to play in the second half, which almost sees the Fighting Saints onto the scoreboard.

  • A nice through ball is played to Calvin Curtis who almost puts the ball in the bottom corner but watches it go wide.

  • A 75th minute header from Seth Vigil hits the crossbar to deny him a goal off of a freekick taken by Eli Leegwater.

  • The Fighting Saints earn a 83rd minute corner-kick to give them a late opportunity in the match, but it is cleared away by Cornerstone defender Ben Wolf.

  • The Golden Eagles hold possession well and see the game out to a good 2-0 victory.

By The Numbers

1/2 – Tyler Corstange tallied 1 goal on the day with only 2 shots in total.

1/5 – Calvin Curtis opened the scoresheet for Cornerstone and totaled 5 shots, 3 of which were on goal.

20/10 – The Fighting Saints took only 10 shots in the game compared to the Golden Eagles 20.

The Golden Eagles will return close to home to take on Calvin University at the Zuidema Soccer Field on Tuesday, September 16th at 7 p.m.
