Woman’s Soccer Faces off against #10 Spring Arbor University

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's soccer (1-4) return home where they host #10 Spring Arbor (3-1-2). Facing a team that is nationally ranked in the top 15 is typically a difficult task, but the Golden Eagles looked to bounce back strongly after a tough road loss against Taylor University. Cornerstone's Gracie Gortmaker opened up the scoring for either side in this match with a shot that landed in the side netting over the hands of Spring Arbor's goalkeeper to put Cornerstone up 1-0 in the first half. The Cougars respond early in the second half and take the lead 2-1. Gracie Gortmaker's attempt on goal in the 73rd minute of play ties up the match 2-2 and Cornerstone sees the game out to the end, tying #12 Spring Arbor. The Golden Eagles' next match will be at home on Saturday the 20th of September at 1 p.m. against their first WHAC opponent, Cleary University.

  • Corinne McGlassion is forced to make the first save of the match in the 15th minute, as Cornerstone's defense continues to hold strong.

  • The Cougars' offense refuses to quit and takes their eighth shot of the match in the 36th minute, but the score remains 0-0.

  • Tori Woodwyk plays the ball wide to the forward, Gracie Gortmaker, who takes a long shot from outside the 18. The shot curls into the side-netting to break the deadlock and put Cornerstone up 1-0 just before halftime.

Second Half:

  • Spring Arbor responds immediately at the start of the second half to tie the game up 1-1 in the 50th minute of play.

  • The first yellow card of the game is shown to Spring Arbor's Claire VanZanten for a foul on Kaitlynn Sal.

  •  The game stays physical as Tori Woodwyk adds her own name to the referee's book with a yellow card of her own.

  • The Cougars keep the pressure on Cornerstone and find the net a second time with a goal from Kayla Baar to grab the lead 2-1.

  • Gracie Gortmaker takes advantage of a poor touch from one of Spring Arbor's center back and gets a shot off, which is barely touched by the goalkeeper. Unfortunately for the Cougars, one of their own defenders miss-hits it into her own goal and ties the game 2-2.
