Men’s Soccer falls short against Cleary in WHAC opener

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer opened their WHAC conference play today with a battle against the Cleary Cougars. Cornerstone looked solid through the first ten minutes of the match but found two first half goals for the Cougars make the difference. The Golden Eagles will look to bounce back quickly as they host Aquinas on Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m.

First Half:
  • The match began well for both sides as they pushed to find a grip in the possession and tactics of each other. 
  • Cleary struck first and early with a back post finish in the 12th minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Cornerstone battled and forced three saves from the Cleary keeper in the stretch of the first half. 
  • The Cougars doubled their lead just before halftime with another slick move that resulted in a tap in goal as they took a 2-0 lead into the break. 
Second Half:
  • The second half started fast once again as it was all offense from both teams. 
  • Calvin Curtis managed to force yet another save, but Cornerstone could not break through. 
  • The first yellow card of the match belonged to Mason Heyboer after some aggressive play. 
  • Steve Herdsman looked to find some juice from the bench play, but the Golden Eagles could not find the decisive shots to make a difference as they fell 2-0 to Cleary.

15 – Cornerstone gathered 15 total shots on the day compared to Cleary's 12. 
9 – The Golden Eagles brought the aggressive play out-fouling the Cougars 9 to 3.
