Women’s Volleyball Knocks off the Gray Wolves

Sylvania, Ohio. – Women's Volleyball (12-3, WHAC 4-1) continues their season on the road against a struggling Lourdes University team who are currently sitting at the bottom of the WHAC with a record of 0-6 in conference play. The Golden Eagles got off to a rocky start, losing the first set 25-23 against the Gray Wolves, but found their groove in the second set of play to win that set 25-15. The final score of the night was 3-1, as the Golden Eagles advanced to 5-1 in conference play! The Golden Eagles continue on the road as they take on 2nd in the WHAC, Defiance College on September 27th in Defiance, Ohio at 2 p.m.

Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Lourdes University – 1 (25-23, 25-15, 25-11, 25-21)

First Set: Cornerstone – 23 Lourdes University – 25

  • The first kill of the game for Cornerstone came from a middle attack by Gabby VerBerkmoes, which gave the Golden Eagles their second point of set one, in which they trailed 2-4.

  • The first service ace of the match came from Aubrey Johnson to tie it up 6-6 in set one.

  • The Gray Wolves aware finding success early on as they get a few double-point runs in to hold the lead 11-8 against #RV Cornerstone.

  • Kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Aubrey Johnson out a Cornerstone time up sought to close the gap, as the Golden Eagles still trail 11-14.

  • Another timeout by Cornerstone was taken, while the Gray Wolves were feeling comfortable with their 20-15 lead.

  • Cornerstone was able to close the gap 23-24 late in the first set, but the Gray Wolves held onto their lead and took set one 25-23.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes University – 15

  • A set defining five points-in-a-row was what the Golden Eagles needed to grab a hold of this second set. They led it 9-4 off a couple of kills from Lydia Uganski and some Lourdes attacking errors.

  • Two kills from Aubrey Johnson and another kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes gave Cornerstone a six-point lead in the second set 16-10.

  • Josilyn Potter's service ace forced the Gray Wolves into a timeout late in set two. The Golden Eagles led 20-12.

  • A kill from the middle Gabby VerBerkmoes and a Lourdes University attacking error handed Cornerstone University the victory in set two 25-15. 

Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes University – 11

  • The Golden Eagles got set three going with two service aces in a row for Ava Ford, which gave CU a commanding lead 5-1 early on.

  • A run of five points for Cornerstone kept them going, leading the third set 11-4 on a Josilyn Potter service ace and multiple Gray Wolves' attacking errors.

  • Emmalee Murphy grabbed a kill of her own to continue inching forward the Cornerstone lead 13-6.

  • The Golden Eagles knocked out the third set with a four-point run, highlighted by two service aces by Alli Pickard that gave Cornerstone the third set 25-11.

Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes University – 21

  • Cornerstone started off the fourth set with one kill each for Aubrey Johnson and Josilyn Potter. The Golden Eagles led 2-0 early on.

  • Two kills in a row by Gabby VerBerkmoes helped Cornerstone to hold a four-point lead in the set 6-2.

  • The Gray Wolves rallied together to take the lead 7-6 with a five-point run. Three kills came from Jolie Sobb of Lourdes University.

  • Lauren Bower got a kill of her own for Cornerstone to tie the set back up 9-9.

  • Two attack errors by the Gray Wolves saw Cornerstone retake the lead 17-16. Lourdes would follow those errors up with a timeout.

  • Gianna Warwick came out of the timeout with a service ace under her belt to make it a two-point lead for the Golden Eagles 18-16.

  • Another kill by Josilyn Potter forced the Gray Wolves back into another timeout as the Golden Eagles can taste the win, they lead 23-19.

  • Gwyn VerBerkmoes and Aubrey Johnson wrap up the match, each with a kill of their own to win set four 25-21.

By The Numbers:

21 – Aubrey Johnson totaled 20 kills in this four-set match, showing strong resilience in a well-fought match.

22 – 22 assists for Payton Hutchinson, as she led her team on the night.

32 – Gianna Warwick led both teams in total digs.

3 – Both Alli Pickard and Josilyn Potter had three service aces against the Gray Wolves.

Women's Volleyball continues their season next Saturday against 2nd in the WHAC Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio at 2 p.m.
