Tough Loss In Back and Forth Battle for Women’s Basketball

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Basketball tipped off against, #22 in the NAIA, Indiana Tech inside of the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The mountain ahead of the Golden Eagles was quite the site as the Golden Eagles held the lead in most of the first quarter before a 10-0 run by the Warriors helped them to hold the lead 19-15 at the end of one quarter. The second quarter saw a similar result, Cornerstone regained the lead but the Warriors fought back and took a 10-point lead at halftime thanks to a 13-0 run. The final quarter was a slow one for Cornerstone as Indiana Tech held them to just four points in the final six and a half minutes. The Warriors would take the win at home 73-55 over the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles will look ahead as they host Aquinas College inside of the Mol Arena, on January 14th, at 5:30 p.m. for a cross-town rivalry matchup.

  • First Quarter

    • Jaxi Long took it in for Cornerstone to open up the scoring in the first quarter 2-0.

    • The Golden Eagles took a four-point lead early on thanks to a layup from Maddie Schuur to make it 4-0.

    • A 10-0 run by the Warriors saw the first quarter end with Indiana Tech on top 19-15 after a well played quarter by the Golden Eagles.

  • Second Quarter

    • The opening points of the second quarter came from Cornerstone's Laura Innerebner, as Indiana Tech were still on top 19-17.

    • Abby Hall hit a big three pointer to hand the lead back to the Golden Eagles 20-19.

    • A midranged jumper by Jaxi Long kept Cornerstone on top of the Warriors 24-21 with about seven minutes left in the period.

    • A 13-point run by Indiana Tech pushed them well ahead of Cornerstone halfway through the second quarter 34-24.

    • Julie Ashbaugh hit her jumper to keep Cornerstone within 10 points of Indiana Tech going into halftime 38-28.

  • Third Quarter

    • Indiana Tech began the third quarter the way they ended the second, as a successful three pointer built their lead to 13 points 41-28.

    • Cornerstone did not score until about a minute and a half into the third period with a midranged jumper by Laura Innerebner.

    • Julie Ashbaugh hit six points in a row to keep the Golden Eagles within reach of the Warriors who led the game 48-38.

    • Gracie Gortmaker hit a three pointer to bring it within five points, but the Warriors closed out the third period ahead by 10 points 57-47.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Both teams saw equal success early in the final period, trading points back and forth. The Warriors, with their lead already in place, stayed paces ahead of Cornerstone 61-49.

    • Julie Ashbaugh brought the score within reach again for Cornerstone with her 12th point of the game to make it 61-51.

    • Two turnovers in a row by Cornerstone gave Indiana Tech the opportunity to push further ahead as the Warriors remained in the lead 65-51.

    • The Golden Eagles were only able to add four more points to their final score as the Warriors held strong defensively and took the home win 73-55.

By the Numbers 

17/11 – Laura Innerebner led her team with a double-double performance. She totaled 17 points on the day and tallied 11 rebounds in the duel against the Warriors.

16/63.5% – Julie Ashbaugh left her mark on the contest with 16 points of her own, shooting 63.5% from the field.

75% – Cornerstone went 3-4 from beyond the arch, going 75% from the three point line.

The Golden Eagles will host Aquinas College inside of the Mol Arena, on January 14th, at 5:30 p.m. for a cross-town rivalry matchup.
