Women’s Basketball Falls Behind Early in 68-51 Loss to the Saints

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Golden Eagles entered this matchup against the hometown rival Saints as narrow underdogs with Aquinas holding fourth place in the WHAC conference. The Saints got hot quickly right from the tip as they shot lights out to open the contest which told the story of the game. Cornerstone will have to bounce back quickly as they take on a strong #RV Lourdes team on Saturday, January 17th for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff. 

Game Highlights: Cornerstone - 51 Aquinas - 68

First Quarter

  • The first quarter started with an Aquinas bucket but Julie Ashbaugh went right down the floor to return the favor and tie the ball game. 

  • Laura Innerebner knocked down a pair of free throws for the Golden Eagles, yet they continued to trail in the matchup. 

  • The Saints then caught fire from behind the arc as they knocked down their fourth three of the first quarter leading 20-4 with three minutes left to play. 

  • Gracie Gortmaker and Julie Ashbaugh added crucial points for the home squad as they looked to fight their way back into this contest. 

  • Aquinas finished the quarter shooting 5-8 from behind the arc as they earned a 23-8 advantage after the first quarter came to a close. 

Second Quarter 

  • The Aquinas Saints took the form of the Golden State Warriors to open up the second quarter as they buried two more deep three point baskets to extend their lead to 29-8. 

  • Laura Innerebner continued to shine from the charity stripe as she put down two more buckets and helped Cornerstone pull back into the game. 

  • Gracie Gortmaker and Julie Ashbaugh sparked the Golden Eagles with plays on the offensive and defensive sides of the floor as Cornerstone now trailed 31-13 showing life at the four minute mark. 

  • Jaxi Long finally found her first bucket of the game thanks to a smooth floater in the paint that cut the AQ lead to 17 points. 

  • On the next possession Gracie Gortmaker beat the shot clock buzzer to add a nice mid-range bucket for Cornerstone, but the Golden Eagles defense continued to miss the mark. 

  • The Golden Eagles closed out the half with a Gracie Gortmaker buzzer beater from deep to narrow the lead to 37-22 at the halftime break. 

Third Quarter 

  • Jaxi Long opened up the third quarter red hot as she knocked down a triple to start the Golden Eagles comeback efforts. 

  • The next three buckets for Cornerstone all came from Jaxi Long who continued her run as she tallied 11 points with trailing 45-31 with five minutes left to play in the quarter. 

  • Aquinas found another quick 5-0 run as they led 50-31 with three minutes left on the clock. 

  • Jaxi Long and Julie Ashbaugh added a pair of buckets that were much needed as the Golden Eagles just looked to remain within striking distance of the Saints. 

  • Cornerstone closed the quarter with a 16 point deficit to overcome as they headed into the final quarter. 

Fourth Quarter 

  • Julie Ashbaugh scored the first bucket of the quarter which was crucial to keep Cornerstone close and hope for a strong finish to the game.

  • Jaxi Long posted her 17th point of the game with just over five minutes remaining but the Saints continued to hold a dominant lead up 59-44. 

  • At the final media timeout of the game Aquinas held the strong lead and looked to be in full control to cruise their way to this rivalry victory. 

  • As the game nearly reached the end the tempers flared for both squads as technical fouls were assessed for a scrum in the paint which was always anticipated in this rivalry contest. 

  • Despite an effective press in the final few minutes of the game it was much too late for the Golden Eagles as they were defeated 68-51. 


By the Numbers

19 - Jaxi Long led the game in scoring with 19 points shooting 8-17 from the field. 

12 - Gracie Gortmaker also secured 12 points in the tough battle with the Saints. 

3 - The Golden Eagles struggled to find assists, only collecting three in the game compared to Aquinas's 10.

The ladies find their next battle come against #RV Lourdes on Saturday, January 17th at 1:00 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
