Women’s Basketball Falls to #RV Lourdes in the Mol Arena

Grand Rapids, Mich.. – After taking a hard loss to the Saints of Aquinas College last Wednesday, Women's Basketball looked to get back on the win column against #RV Lourdes University inside of the Mol Arena. The Golden Eagles kept it close in the first quarter against their ranked opponents. The Gray Wolves held a slight lead at the end of the first quarter 21-17. The second quarter saw #RV Lourdes take a 24-point lead going into halftime 50-26 thanks to many three pointers from guard Emma Pedroza. The shots kept falling for the Gray Wolves in the third period, as they remained on top of Cornerstone by 25-points 70-45 at the end of the three quarters. Cornerstone would bring it with 17 at one point in the final quarter but the Gray Wolves completed the road game on top 84-65 over the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles make their way to Adrian, Mich. where they will take on the Saints of Siena Heights University inside of the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 65 #RV Lourdes – 84

  • First Quarter

    • The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game off of a three pointer by Maddie Schuur, Cornerstone were ahead 9-7 about three minutes into the first period.

    • Jaxi Long tied it back up with her own contested three pointer 12-12 with just five and a half left to play in the first period.

    • A free throw and a good three pointer from Gracie Gortmaker saw Cornerstone back to another slight lead 17-16.

    • Four points by the Gray Wolves would end the first quarter with Lourdes back on top 21-17, as the Golden Eagles continued to fight versus their ranked opponent.

  • Second Quarter

    • The Gray Wolves came into the second quarter with a mission as they put up 11 points in-a-row to make it a 15-point lead in the second period with still about eight minutes left 32-17.

    • Julie Ashbaugh hit the layup to make it an 11-point game as the Gray Wolves remained on top 32-21.

    • The last points for Cornerstone in the second quarter came off of a three pointer by Jaxi Long, Lourdes still held a strong lead 42-26.

    • The Gray Wolves would put eight more up on the board and finish the first half ahead of the Golden Eagles by 24 points 50-26.

  • Third Quarter

    • Laura Innerebner got it going to open the third quarter with a good layup as Cornerstone trailed to the Gray Wolves 50-28.

    • The three pointer by Gracie Gortmaker cut the Lourdes lead to 24 but Cornerstone still had a long way to go behind 57-33 in the third quarter.

    • The Gray Wolves reached the 70-point mark as Gracie Gortmaker hit another three. Lourdes remained dominant 70-43.

    • Lily Gortmaker made her layup on a fast break as the third quarter reached its climax. Lourdes held a strong lead at the end of three periods 70-45 over Cornerstone University.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh scored the first points for Cornerstone in the fourth quarter about two and a half minutes into the period. Lourdes were still ahead 73-47.

    • Jaxi Long added to her double-digit point total with another three pointer to make it 73-52 with about six minutes to play.

    • Jaxi Long would score 10 points in-a-row for Cornerstone in the final minutes, as Cornerstone fell just short in the contest to Lourdes University 84-65

By the Numbers 

25/50% – No double-double for Jaxi Long, but she went on an extra 10-point drive at the end of the fourth quarter to reach 25 points on the day as she went 5-10 from the three point line.

19/8 – The only other Golden Eagle to reach double-digit points in the contest was Gracie Gortmaker who put up 19 of her own, three of which came from beyond the three point arch. She rounded off her performance with eight total rebounds against the Gray Wolves.

24 - Both teams put up just 24 points in the paint, as this game was a battle of three pointers and mid-ranged jump shots.

The Golden Eagles make their way to Adrian, Mich. where they will take on the Saints of Siena Heights University inside of the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m.
