Men's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to #5 Missouri Valley

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Volleyball battled hard but ultimately fell to #5 Missouri Valley in three sets. Ethan Walker hit at a miraculous 53.8% rate leading the Golden Eagles with seven kills. Matthew True shined leading Cornerstone with seven blocks while Mitchell Carrera had four service aces paired with nine digs. Men's Volleyball is back in action on Saturday as they face #10 Benedictine Mesa inside the Mol Arena at 11:30am.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 0 Missouri Valley – 3 (18-25, 17-25, 23-25)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 18 Missouri Valley – 25
  • The Golden Eagles started off the match going up 2-0 off errors by Missouri Valley.
  • Cornerstone was able to maintain their lead early in the first set as Andrew Galanes had back-to-back kills.
  • Missouri Valley fought their way back tying the match at 13 with three straight points. 
  • The Goldens struggled to keep the ball in play, and the Vikings took their first lead of the match going up 19-16.
  • After going on 6-1 run, Missouri Valley took the first set 25-19.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 17 Missouri Valley– 25
  • The second set started off with Missouri Valley taking a quick 5-1 lead, however Cornerstone fought right back to tie it at five with a kill from Matthew True and an ace by Mitchell Carrera.
  • The Vikings responded right back going on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles kept the match within five with kills from Ethan Walker and Matthew True.
  • Both teams traded a pair of kills, but some attack errors by CU help the Vikings extend their lead. 
  • Cornerstone battled to get back within six with an ace by Matthew True
  • Despite the comeback effort from CU, Missouri Valley closed out the second set with a 25-17 win.
     
Third Set: Cornerstone – 23 Missouri Valley – 25
  • The third set began with both teams trading points making it a 5-5 game early.
  • Kills by Ethan Walker and Josiah Reif kept CU within one as the Vikings took a 9-8 lead.
  • Cornerstone rallied to take their first lead in the set with four straight points highlighted by another service ace from Mitchell Carrera.
  • Missouri Valley battled right back to retake the lead making it a 17-16 game in favor the Vikings.
  • The Golden Eagles won't go down quietly as a kill from Ethan Walker and attack error paired with another service ace by Mitchell Carrera Cu took a 23-21 lead.
  • The Vikings closed out the set and the game with four straight points to win the third set 25-23.
