Men's Volleyball Takes Down #10 Benedictine Mesa for First Win of the Season

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Volleyball gets their first win of the season, taking down #10 Benedictine Mesa in five sets. Matthew True led the Golden Eagles with 22 kills while Andrew Galanes totaled 30 assists, 13 kills and four blocks. Cornerstone is back in action on Tuesday, January 27th against Bethel University for their first conference matchup at 7 p.m.

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Benedictine Mesa – 23
  • The match began with both teams trading points and keeping things even at five a piece.
  • A kill from Andrew Galanes and an attack error by the Red Hawks help CU take a 10-7 lead early in the set.
  • Benedictine Mesa rallied back but a set error by the Red Hawks allowed the Golden Eagles to tie the set at 14.
  • Four straight points from CU highlighted by two service aces by Ryder Roberts gave Cornerstone an 18-15 lead over the Red Hawks.
  • The Red Hawks fought back but a service error allows Cornerstone to keep the set even at 21.
  • Cornerstone close the first set with a kill from Matthew True and a service error by the Red Hawks to secure a 25-23 first set victory.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 23 Benedictine Mesa– 25
  • The second set started off with four straight points by CU including a kill and a block by JeQuarri Shannon.
  • Benedictine Mesa went on a run to tie the set at six.
  • The Red Hawks continued to control the second set getting three straight kills to force a CU timeout as the Golden Eagles went down by five.
  • Cornerstone is able to get within four with a kill from Ryder Roberts and an attack error by Benedictine to make it a 19-15 game.
  • A 6-1 run by the Golden Eagles capped off by another JeQuarri Shannon kill tied the second set at 21.
  • Despite the comeback effort from CU, Benedictine Mesa took the second set 25-23.
     
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Benedictine Mesa – 23
  • The third set began with the teams trading points to make it 3-3 early in the set.
  • Cornerstone stays within two as a kill by Ethan Walker made it a 9-7 game in favor of the Red Hawks.
  • A 5-2 run by the Golden Eagles with kills from Matthew True and Patrick Burke even the third set at 13.
  • The third set continued to be a back-and-forth battle as they set moves to 18-18.
  • The Golden Eagles force the Red Hawks to take a timeout as a kill from Patrick Burke gave CU a 23-22 lead.
  • Matthew True closes out the third to secure another 25-23 victory for the Golden Eagles giving them a 2-1 set lead.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 24 Benedictine Mesa – 26
  • Cornerstone starts the fourth set taking a 3-0 lead with Andrew Galanes recording back-to-back service aces.
  • The Golden Eagles maintained their lead with three straight points including a kill from Andrew Galanes and an ace by Josiah Reif making it a 10-7 game.
  • Both teams continued to keep it close with points going back and forth to make it a 16-16 game.
  • Cornerstone gets four-straight points off an ace by Patrick Burke and three errors by the Red Hawks to take a 20-17 lead in the fourth set.
  • Benedictine Mesa went on a run of their own tying the set at 21, forcing CU to take a timeout.
  • The Red Hawks take set four 26-24.
Fifth Set: Cornerstone –15 Benedictine Mesa – 8
  • Set five began with both teams once again trading points but kills by Patrick Burke and Andrew Galanes gave CU a 5-3 lead.
  • Cornerstone extended their lead to 8-4 as Andrew Galanes gets another kill.
  • JeQuarri Shannon and Ryder Roberts combined for a pair of kills to give the Golden Eagles a 12-7 advantage over the Red Hawks.
  • Ethan Walker ends the match with a statement kill to give CU a 15-8 set five victory and 3-2 win over the Red Hawks.

22 – Matthew True led the Golden Eagles with 22 kills.
30/13 – Andrew Galanes had 30 assists along with recording 13 kills. 
 .529 – JeQuarri Shannon hit at a rate of 52.9% totaling 11 kills in the match.
