27-Point Win in Cleary Rematch for Women’s Basketball

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball, sitting at 8th in the WHAC standings, hosted Cleary University inside of the Mol Arena for a crucial late-season matchup against the Cougars. 

The Golden Eagles finished the first quarter with the lead 18-6, thanks to a 10-0 run that lasted for about 5 minutes in the first period. The Golden Eagles ended the second period with a run of 9-0, and headed into the locker room up by 19 over Cleary University. Cornerstone kept it moving in the third quarter as they saw it out to a 23-point lead 62-39 going into the final period. With about two and a half minutes to go in the final period, the Cornerstone Women's Basketball freshman saw their way to the floor to seal the home win 77-50 over the Cougars of Cleary University!

Women's Basketball will return to the Mol Arena to take on the Crusaders of Madonna University on Wednesday, January 28 at 5:30 p.m.

 

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 77 Cleary – 50

  • First Quarter

    • Cornerstone held a decent lead at the start of the first quarter over the Cougars 7-2 off of a made three pointer by Maddie Schuur.

    • The Golden Eagles added seven more points to the lead before the Cougars found a way to respond. Cornerstone led 14-2.

    • Jaxi Long hit her jump shot with a minute and a half left in the quarter to make it 16-7 for the Golden Eagles.

    • The first period came to its conclusion on the back of two free throws sunk by Jaxi Long, as the Golden Eagles held the lead 18-7.

  • Second Quarter

    • The first points came about a minute and a half into play in the second quarter from a Cleary three pointer made by Makenna Jarrat.

    • Jaxi Long and Julie Ashbaugh both headed to the charity stripe and knocked down four free throws to keep Cornerstone on top 22-13.

    • A wide open three pointer by Gracie Gortmaker fell through the hoop to keep Cornerstone running. The Golden Eagles had a 12-point lead 27-15 with about six and a half left to go before halftime.

    • A run of nine points by the Golden Eagles and a Jaxi Long three pointer completed the first half of play with Cornerstone University well ahead of the Cougars 36-17. 

  • Third Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh knocked down the first points in the third quarter with a good layup to continue the Cornerstone control 40-22.

    • Laura Innerebner fancied a three pointer uncontested and was rewarded for her efforts as it sank into the basket and kept Cornerstone ahead 45-26.

    • Julie Ashbaugh made two layups in a row for the Golden Eagles as they maintained their lead 49-28.

    • The 20-point lead came with 58 seconds to go in the third quarter as Gracie Gortmaker hit another free throw to make it 58-38 for the Golden Eagles.

    • Abby Hall dropped a three pointer to keep Cornerstone clear of Cleary at the end of the third period. Cornerstone remained dominant with a 23-point lead 62-39.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Fourth quarter action got underway thanks to Jaxi Long's 19th point of the game to keep the offense running for Cornerstone 64-41.

    • Abby Hall entered double digits with a good three pointer to make it a 26-point lead for the Golden Eagles 75-44 with over six minutes to play in regulation.

    • The freshman lineup saw its way to the floor, and Kaila Aston put up a layup off of an assist from Kennedy Mathey to seal the deal for the Golden Eagles as they complete the grudge match win over the Cougars 77-50.

By the Numbers 

19/13 – Another double-double! Jaxi Long totaled 19 points on the day and 13 rebounds in the crucial matchup between 5th in the WHAC Cleary University.

18/80% – Julie Ashbaugh went 8-10 from the field and dropped 18 points on the Cougars' defense.

10/42.9% – Abby Hall dropped three three pointers and one free throw to total 10 points on the day and shot 42.9% from beyond the arch.

9 – Nine different Golden Eagles got their name on the score sheet in the 27-point win!
