Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball returned to their home arena to face off against the Crusaders of Madonna University for the second time this season. The first meeting between these two sides saw Cornerstone to a three-point victory 68-65 at Madonna.
The Golden Eagles began the game hot from beyond the arch, going 3-5 from the three point line as they held a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter 19-15. Cornerstone kept it going in the second period, as they went 4-7 from three but were out-rebounded 9-4 by the Crusaders. Cornerstone would head into halftime up by four points 40-36. Cornerstone shot 61.5% from the field in the third quarter of play and held a decent lead of seven points going into the final period 59-52. Cornerstone was able to out-rebound the Crusaders in the final quarter 11-10, as the Golden Eagles got the job done with a win over Madonna 75-69.
Women's Basketball will keep it at home for Alumni Day and Poster Day this Saturday, January 31, at 1 P.M. versus the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech.

First Quarter

Julie Ashbaugh opened up the contest with a good layup off the assist from Jaxi Long to make it 2-0 for Cornerstone.

Jaxi Long knocked down two three pointers to get Cornerstone to a three-point lead early on 8-5.

The Golden Eagles got away to an eight-point lead with four minutes to go in the quarter thanks to an Abby Hall three pointer to make it 15-7 for Cornerstone.

The final points for Cornerstone in the first period came from a good jumper by Gracie Gortmaker to finish out the quarter with the Golden Eagles on top 19-15.

Second Quarter

The Golden Eagles fought through the opening minute of the second quarter and were rewarded with a Maddie Schuur three pointer which made it a six-point lead for Cornerstone 22-16.

A wide-open Gracie Gortmaker sent two more points home with the assist from Maddie Schuur, which kept Cornerstone up 24-21.

Madonna was able to tie it up 24-24 but Abby Hall came back to hit another three pointer. The Golden Eagles went into their next timeout up by three, 27-24 with under six minutes to go in the half.

Kennedy Matheny hit a crowd-pleasing three pointer to continue to push Cornerstone forward. The Golden Eagles still held the lead over the Crusaders 32-24.

Abby Hall hit her third three pointer of the night to keep Cornerstone up by seven points 35-28.

The Golden Eagles escaped the second quarter with a four-point lead 40-36 over Madonna University.

Third Quarter

The third quarter got going for Cornerstone thanks to a well-run play to get Abi Bandstra open for a free layup as the Golden Eagles stayed ahead 42-38.

A well-placed pass by Jaxi Long set up Laura Innerebner for a free two points. The Golden Eagles remained on top of the Crusaders 44-40.

Jaxi Long broke into double-digits as she helped Cornerstone to a 10-points lead in the third quarter 52-42.

Jaxi Long put an end to a small Madonna run in the third quarter with a good drive that kept Cornerstone up 54-47

Maddie Schuur would hit a nice three pointer in response to a previous Crusader three pointer to finish the third quarter for Cornerstone, who led 59-52.

Fourth Quarter

The first two minutes and a half minutes of the final quarter were quiet for both the Golden Eagles and Madonna, as the score only inched forward by two points for the Crusaders. Cornerstone remained on top 59-54.

The Crusaders tied the game back up with under seven to go before Jaxi Long knocked down another three to keep Cornerstone up 62-69.

Gracie Gortmaker hit a big layup to make it a five-point lead with four minutes to go 64-59.

Two free throws made by Julie Ashbaugh broke the tie with under two minutes to go. Cornerstone were ahead 69-67.

Jaxi Long knocked down two more free throws to break into the 20s in total points. The Golden Eagles remained on top of Madonna 71-67 with a minute left in regulation.

The game remained close in the final seconds, but two more good free throws by Jaxi Long saw the score to a two-possession game. Cornerstone held the lead 73-69.

Julie Ashbaugh headed to the charity stripe with one second on the scoreboard. Ashbaugh knocked them both down to complete the second victory of the season over the Crusaders with a score of 75-69.
By the Numbers
22/5 – Another game over 20 points for Jaxi Long as she shot 83.3% from three to nab 22 points in the contest, grabbing five rebounds as well.
12/6-6 – Julie Ashbaugh put up her own performance with 16 total points, as she went 6-6 from the charity stripe for the Golden Eagles.
11/6 – Laura Innerebner hit 11 points against the Crusaders and assisted her teammates a total of six times in the win.
