Women’s Basketball Seals the Win With Free Throws Over the Blue Devils

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball remained eighth in the WHAC as they entered into their next contest against the ninth placed Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. The last meeting between the two sides saw Cornerstone to a 16-point win over Lawrence Tech 80-64.

The Golden Eagles played through almost half of the first quarter before seeing the Blue Devils get on the board. Seven turnovers by Lawrence Tech helped Cornerstone to a strong lead at the end of the first quarter 15-9. Cornerstone grabbed nine assists in the second quarter alone as they shot 66.7% from the field to hold a lead of 40-31 at the end of the first half. Cornerstone was able to continue their lead in the third quarter, grabbing 10 rebounds and ending the quarter still ahead 54-46. The Golden Eagles highlighted the final quarter with a three point shooting percentage of 33.3% to Lawrence Tech's 0-4 from three.

Women's Basketball will look ahead to a matchup versus the Yellow Jackets in Defiance, Ohio next Wednesday, February 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 67 Lawrence Tech – 60

  • First Quarter

    • Four turnovers in the first two minutes by the Blue Devils meant a slow start for the players in blue. The Golden Eagles got on the board first with two free throws from Julie Ashbaugh, followed by a three pointer by Jaxi Long which made it 5-0.

    • Another Lawrence Tech turnover meant Julie Ashbaugh would add to the Cornerstone total with a layup assisted by Gracie Gortmaker as the Golden Eagles made it a 7-0 run to start the game.

    • Laura Innerebner took advantage of the pass from Abby Hall to keep the Golden Eagles ahead. The score was 13-9 with under a minute to go in the first quarter.

    • Cornerstone would end the period with a defensive stop to close out the first quarter up 15-9.

  • Second Quarter

    • A mid-ranged jumper by Julie Ashbaugh opened the second quarter of scoring for Cornerstone as the Golden Eagles remained on top 17-9.

    • Into the double-digits went Julie Ashbaugh with another layup. Cornerstone held a five-point lead in the second quarter 19-14.

    • The Blue Devils tied it up 21-21 in the second quarter before Jaxi Long added four points for Cornerstone to get them back to a decent lead 25-21.

    • Gracie Gortmaker hit two free throws, which made it an eight point lead for the Golden Eagles 29-21 with under five to play in the half.

    • Jaxi Long hit double-digits with a big three pointer as the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 10-points 33-23.

    • Gracie Gortmaker got her fifth assist of the day as Jaxi Long made another layup. The Golden Eagles continued to push forward on offense with a seven-point lead 38-31.

    • Cornerstone held possession as the shot clock disappeared. A missed three pointer by Maddie Schuur led to an offensive rebound by Jaxi Long and a put back to end the first half for Cornerstone 40-31 over the Blue Devils.

  • Third Quarter

    • Maddie Schuur hit the opening three pointer to get it going for Cornerstone in the third quarter as the Golden Eagles remained up 43-31.

    • Gracie Gortmaker made a layup off of the assist from Abi Bandstra. Cornerstone held the lead in the third quarter 47-40.

    • Two made free throws by Gracie Gortmaker helped Cornerstone remain on top by nine points with less than four minutes to go. The Golden Eagles led 52-43 in the third period.

    • The third quarter buzzer blew with Cornerstone ahead of the Blue Devils by eight points 54-46.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • The final period began for Cornerstone with a layup by Gracie Gortmaker. The score was 56-46 with Cornerstone in the lead.

    • The Blue Devils were able to bring it within six points, 56-50, of the Golden Eagles, as Cornerstone took their first timeout of the final quarter.

    • Maddie Schuur broke the silence for Cornerstone with five minutes left to play, as she knocked down a three pointer to keep the Golden Eagles up by seven points 59-52.

    • A great pass by Gracie Gortmaker opened up Julie Ashbaugh for a mid-ranged jumper. She knocked it down to force the Blue Devils into a timeout with about three minutes to play in regulation. The Golden Eagles still held the lead 65-54.

    • The final three minutes were quiet for Cornerstone on offense, but their defensive stops kept them in the lead 65-56 with under a minute to go.

    • Gracie Gortmaker sealed the win with two free throws as Cornerstone took down the Blue Devils 67-60.

By the Numbers 

19/8 – Julie Ashbaugh led the way for Cornerstone with 19 total points and eight rebounds in the contest, just short of a double-double.

18/7 – Jaxi Long fouled out but not before putting up 18 points and seven assists in the win over Lawrence Tech.

15/6 – The final Golden Eagles to break double-digits in points was Gracie Gortmaker who had 15 points and six assists.

.750/15-20 – The Golden Eagles sealed the win from the free throw line as they shot 75% (15-20) from the charity stripe.
