Women's Basketball Owns Their Home Court Versus The Racers

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball returned home to the Mol Arena for a WHAC game against the Racers of the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Golden Eagles battled hard for a relatively strong lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to clutch three pointers by Gracie Gortmaker, Jaxi Long, and Abby Hall. Cornerstone held the lead in the first quarter 19-11. UNOH came within seven points of the Golden Eagles in the second quarter but the layup with 19 seconds left completed the period for Cornerstone who led 40-27. The Golden Eagles still held a demanding lead in the third quarter, where the Racers were only able to bring it within 12-points. The third quarter would end with Cornerstone still on top 58-44. Cornerstone kept the offense going in the final quarter of play as they completed the WHAC win 71-54. Cornerstone will look ahead to a mid-week matchup against the Wolverines of the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, January 7th at 5:30 p.m. in Dearborn, Michigan.

  • First Quarter

    • The Golden Eagles got rolling in the first with the first two points coming from Julie Ashbaugh to make it 2-0 for CU.

    • Abby Hall hit the first Cornerstone three pointer of the game to put Cornerstone up 5-3 in the first period.

    • A contested three pointer by Jaxi Long found its way through the basket to keep it going for Cornerstone 8-4 over the Racers.

    • Gracie Gortmaker made the layup and drew a foul to make it a three point play with a good layup. Cornerstone had a 10-point lead 18-8 with about one minute to go in the first quarter of play.

    • The first quarter came to its conclusion with Cornerstone on top by eight points 19-11.

  • Second Quarter

    • Abby Hall opened the scoring in the second quarter with a three pointer, the Golden Eagles were ahead 22-11.

    • A three pointer from UNOH brought them back within seven points of the Golden Eagles, but a layup by Julie Ashbaugh kept Cornerstone ahead by nine points 30-21 with about three and a half minutes to go.

    • The doubt digit returned to the floor for Cornerstone as they retook an 11-point lead with 71 seconds left in the half 38-27.

    • The first half of play completed with Cornerstone on top by 13 points 40-27 thanks to a layup by Laura Innerebner with 19 seconds to go.

  • Third Quarter

    • The beginning of the third quarter was marked by a 15-point lead for Cornerstone off of two early layups by the Golden Eagles 44-29.

    • Off the Abi Bandstra layup, Cornerstone hit an 18-point lead in the third quarter 49-31.

    • Jaxi Long hit another three pointer to keep it going for the Golden Eagles as they held the lead over UNOH 52-33.

    • The Racers went on a seven-point run late in the third quarter to cut the Cornerstone lead to just 12, 52-40.

    • Julie Ashbaugh made the layup that brought Cornerstone back to a 16-point lead near the end of the third quarter 58-16.

    • The third quarter ended with the Golden Eagles in the lead 58-44.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Maddie Schuur opened up the final quarter with two three pointers to get it going for Cornerstone as they led 64-46.

    • Cornerstone held the 22-point lead with about five minutes to go thanks to a layup by Gracie Gortmaker to make it 68-46.

    • Two good free throws by Jaxi Long broke the Golden Eagles into the 70s, leading with just about four and a half minutes to go 70-46.

    • Kaila Aston made the final point for Cornerstone from the charity stripe as the Golden Eagles completed the game on top 71-54.

By the Numbers 

17/10 – Jaxi Long hit the double-double with 17 total points and 10 rebounds on the day versus the Racers.

13/6/6 – Gracie Gortmaker dropped 13 points in this conference contest against UNOH and topped off her performance with six rebounds and six assists.

12/11/100% – A second double-double for Cornerstone came from Julie Ashbaugh who put down 12 points, 11 rebounds, and went 4-4 from the free throw line.

12/9/75% – Laura Innerbner dropped 12 points against the Racers, grabbed 9 rebounds, and shot 75% from the field.
