Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball took down two ranked opponents including the three-time reigning National Champions #7 Indiana Wesleyan and receiving votes Spring Arbor. The Golden Eagles came out strong in game one defeating IWU in straight sets, then followed that up with a gritty four set win over the Cougars of Spring Arbor.
Aubrey Johnson led CU with 21 kills on the day along with 24 digs. The Golden Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, October 7th as they host the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn inside Mol Arena at 7 p.m.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 #7 Indiana Wesleyan – 0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-6)
First Set: Cornerstone – 26 Indiana Wesleyan – 24
- The match began with Cornerstone taking a 7-4 lead with two kills by Gwyn Verberkmoes paired with service aces by Aubrey Johnson and Gianna Warwick.
- Indiana Wesleyan fought back within two but kills by Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre maintained the Golden Eagles lead.
- The Wildcats went on a four-point run tied the set at 16.
- IWU followed that by taking a 19-16 lead, but Cornerstone responded with a service ace by Gianna Warwick and two errors by the Wildcats to tie the set at 19.
- Both teams continued to the back-and-forth battle as a block by Aubrey Johnson and two errors by IWU tied the set up at 23.
- The Golden Eagles secured a set one win with three straight points coming off a kill by Kaelyn Sohre, a service ace by Payton Hutchinson and finished off on a block by Kaelyn Sohre and Aubrey Johnson.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Indiana Wesleyan – 19
- The second set started with Indiana Wesleyan taking a quick 3-0 lead, but Cornerstone countered with a kill and an ace by Josilyn Potter along with a kill from Aubrey Johnson as CU took a 6-5 lead.
- The Golden Eagles gained a three-point advantage as Gwyn VerBerkmoes and Josilyn Potter recorded kills along with a solo block by Kaelyn Sohre which made it 13-10 in set two.
- CU rallied to take four straight points with kills by Kaelyn Sohre and Josilyn Potter with Payton Hutchinson tallying a service ace to put Cornerstone ahead 20-16.
- The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 set lead as two kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes ended the second set at 25-19 in favor of CU.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Indiana Wesleyan – 6

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Spring Arbor – 20
- The match began with Cornerstone taking a 6-4 lead off a kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes and a service ace by Gianna Warwick.
- Spring Arbor battled back and took the lead 14-12 with CU getting back within one with a kill by Aubrey Johnson to make it 14-13.
- Cornerstone regained the lead in set one with kills from Josilyn Potter and Gabby VerBerkmoes to give CU a 19-18 advantage.
- The Golden Eagles scored four-straight points with kills by Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre who also teamed for a block and gave CU the set one win.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 20 Spring Arbor – 25
- The second set started with Cornerstone taking a quick 4-0 lead with blocks by Josilyn Potter, Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes.
- Spring Arbor responded with six points in a row to take a two-point lead over CU.
- The Golden Eagles quickly responded with kills by Payton Hutchinson and Aubrey Johnsons to retake the lead.
- The Cougars managed to take a four-point lead over Cornerstone making it an 18-14 game in set two.
- Two kills by Aubrey Johnson got Cornerstone closer but Spring Arbor took set two 25-20.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Spring Arbor – 18
- The third set saw the Golden Eagles take another quick 5-1 lead with three kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes and an ace by Josilyn Potter.
- Despite Spring Arbor getting within one, two kills by Josilyn Potter and a service ace by Payton Hutchinson extended Cornerstone's lead to three.
- The Golden Eagles continued to expand their lead with a kill by Aubrey Johnson and a service ace by Gianna Warwick put CU up by seven.
- Payton Hutchinson's back-to-back service aces-maintained Cornerstone's seven-point advantage making it 22-15 game in set three.
- Olivia Endris closed out the third set with a service ace to put Cornerstone up two sets to one.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Spring Arbor – 20
- The fourth set saw Spring Arbor take a 7-2 lead over Cornerstone early.
- The Golden Eagles responded with an 8-1 run featuring kills Gabby VerBerkmoes, Aubrey Johnson and Kaelyn Sohre to make it a 10-8 game in favor of CU.
- Both teams battled back and forth with multiple lead changes before a solo block by Gabby VerBerkmoes tied the set at 17.
- Cornerstone finished off the set and the match on an 8-2 run with kills by Josilyn Potter and Aubrey Johnson along with another service ace by Olivia Endris to secure the four set win for CU.
