Overtime Battle Ends in Defeat for Women's Basketball

Lima, Ohio – Women's Basketball held the seventh spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, just ahead of their eighth placed opponents UNOH. The Racers came into the contest with a conference record of 9-10. The previous matchup between these two sides saw Cornerstone win by 17 points 71-54 inside of the Mol Arena.

The Golden Eagles struggled in the first quarter of play as they were unable to find the basket until about five minutes in. Cornerstone managed to bring it within seven points of the Racers at the end of one period. The Racers led at the end of the first quarter 18-11. Cornerstone fought back in the second quarter but still trailed by seven points going into halftime 33-26. Cornerstone were able to hold the Racers to just 17 points in the third quarter as they knocked down 21 of their own. The Racers remained on top 50-47 going into the final quarter of play. Cornerstone was unable to finish the contest on a key play in the final seconds, but held strong on defense to force the contest into overtime as the score was tied 64-64. The Racers were able to jump ahead in overtime and Cornerstone was unable to tie it back up or take the lead. UNOH would complete the series with a win over the Golden Eagles 77-73.

Women's Basketball move on to their final away regular season game as they head to Aquinas for a cross-town rivalry matchup. The game will take place on February 18th, at 5:30 p.m. inside of the Sturrus Spot and Fitness Center.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 73 UNOH – 77

  • First Quarter

    • About halfway through the first quarter, Jaxi Long hit the first points of the day with a mid-ranged jumper. Cornerstone saw themselves down by 10 points 12-2.

    • Abby Hall hit the first three pointer of the contest for Cornerstone as they remained in a large deficit of 11 points. The Racers held the lead 16-5 with about three minutes to play.

    • Another three pointer by Abby Hall saw Cornerstone cut the Racers' lead down to just eight points 16-8.

    • The Racers held the lead at the end of the first quarter 18-11, as Cornerstone only shot 28.6% from the field in the first period of play.

  • Second Quarter

    • The Racers kept pushing in the second quarter. They worked their way back to a 13-point lead 26-13 with under seven to play.

    • Jaxi Long drained her layup to cut it back down to 11 points, but UNOH still were ahead 26-15.

    • UNOH held an 11-point lead with under three minutes to play. Julie Ashbaugh went to the line and knocked down two free throws to make it a nine-point game with under two minutes to go in the half. UNOH remained on top 33-24.

    • Kaila Aston had an open layup thanks to the pass from Jaxi Long that inched Cornerstone closer, but they still trailed 33-26 with 15 seconds left.

  • Third Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh opened up the third quarter with a layup that brought it within five points of the Racers 33-28.

    • A three pointer by Jaxi Long fell right before a media timeout. Cornerstone still trailed by nine points 44-35 to the Racers.

    • Abby Hall drained a three pointer to cut the Racer lead down to just six points 44-38.

    • A big layup from Maddie Schuur cut the Racer lead to just two points. UNOH remained on top 44-42.

    • Jaxi Long hit her jumper as the third quarter came to its end. UNOH held the lead going into the final period 50-47.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • Maddie Schuur tied up the game with a three pointer in the opening 30 seconds of the final quarter. The score was 50-50.

    • A three pointer by Abi Bandstra jumped Cornerstone to a one-point lead 53-52 in the final quarter.

    • A well planned play got Abby Hall through for a layup as Cornerstone went ahead to a three-point lead with about seven and a half minutes to go 57-54.

    • Gracie Gortmaker got open for a three pointer to keep the Golden Eagles on top of the Racers 60-59

    • Abby Hall headed to the charity stripe and sank both to keep Cornerstone ahead by three points with about four minutes to play 62-59.

    • The jumper by Julie Ashbaugh made it a five-point lead for the Golden Eagles as the clock trickled down. Cornerstone led 64-59.

    • The Racers tied the game back up with about 30 seconds to go. The score was tied up 64-64 as the teams prepared for the first period of overtime.

  • Overtime

    • The Racers took the first lead of overtime with a three pointer that launched them ahead. They followed it up with another successful offensive play that pushed them forward by five points 69-64.

    • Jaxi Long knocked down another three pointer to bring it back within two points of the Racers who led 69-67.

    • A layup by Julie Ashbaugh sought to keep Cornerstone in the contest. They remained behind 74-71 with about a minute left in the first period of OT.

    • Jaxi Long made a jumper to keep it a one-possession game, but the Golden Eagles had to foul in order to have a chance to come back.

    • The Racers sank two free throws to get ahead to a four-point lead with nine seconds on the clock 77-73.

    • Cornerstone were unable to tie it up or take the lead in the final seconds, as UNOH took the second game of the series 77-73 in overtime play.

By the Numbers 

16/7/.571 – Abby Hall led the way for Cornerstone as they knocked down 16 total points with 7 rebounds. Additionally, she shot .571 from beyond the arch but was held to just seven total attempts from three.

16/5 – Jaxi Long added 16 total points to her team's total with five rebounds in the unfortunate loss to the Racers of UNOH.

14/9 – Just short of a double-double, Julie Ashbaugh sank 14 points for Cornerstone and grabbed nine rebounds in the contest.
