Women’s Basketball Put Up 17 Points off of Turnovers Over Aquinas

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball faced a tough challenge, facing off against the third in conference with only two games left, taking on Aquinas, and taking on Aquinas in their home territory. Women's Basketball came into this matchup at seventh in the WHAC with a conference record of 10-10 compared to the Saints' record of 16-4.

The Golden Eagles and the Saints only put up a combined point total in the first quarter of 21 points. Aquinas held the lead at the end of the first period 11-10 in a low-scoring first quarter of action. Cornerstone out-shot the Saints in the second quarter 30.8% from the field to 18.2% from the field. The Golden Eagles would go into halftime with a small margin between them and Aquinas. Cornerstone led at half 22-21. Cornerstone kept it rolling in the third, as they shot 53.8% from the field and held a nine-point lead 39-30 at the end of the third quarter. Cornerstone held the Saints to just 19 points in the final quarter as they grabbed seven total rebounds in the final period alone. The Golden Eagles would take a win home with them over the Saints 56-49.

Women's Basketball will hosts #24 Indiana Tech for their final regular season contest, as well as the Golden Eagles's Senior Night! The game will be held in the Mol Arena on February 21, at 1 p.m.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 56 Aquinas – 49

  • First Quarter

    • Laura Innerebner began the quiet first quarter with a three pointer in the opening thirty seconds of play to put Cornerstone ahead 3-0.

    • Not much scoring occurred in the rest of the first quarter as the Saints bounced ahead 4-3 with about five and a half to play.

    • Jaxi Long hit a layup at the two-and-a-half minute mark to keep Cornerstone within two points of Aquinas 9-7.

    • A free throw by Jaxi Long tied the game up 9-9 with just two minutes remaining in the first quarter of play.

    • Aquinas held the lead at the end of the first quarter by a one-point margin 11-10.

  • Second Quarter

    • Another three pointer from the unlikely shooter, Laura Innerebner, saw its way through the basket to keep Cornerstone with a point of the Saints 14-13.

    • After no scoring for three minutes of game-time, the Saints jumped up to a lead 17-14 off of a good three pointer.

    • Jaxi Long followed it up with a good jumper to keep the contest close 17-16.

    • Julie Ashbaugh fought through the traffic for a layup, as Cornerstone pulled ahead just barely with just under three minutes to play. The Golden Eagles were up 20-19.

    • Free throws by Gracie Gortmaker finished off the quarter for both teams, as Cornerstone headed into the locker room up by one point 22-21.

  • Third Quarter

    • Laura Innerebner opened up the third quarter with another three pointer on the night to help Cornerstone to a four-point lead 27-23.

    • Gracie Gortmaker saw her layup fall through to break Cornerstone into an eight-point lead halfway through the third quarter 31-23.

    • Cornerstone kept it going with a layup by Julie Ashbaugh that kept the Golden Eagles up by eight points with under three and a half to go 35-27.

    • Julie Ashbaugh knocked another one down to make it a double-digit lead for the Golden Eagles 37-27.

    • Cornerstone held the lead at the end of the third quarter 39-30 as the Golden Eagles shot 53.8% from the field.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • The Golden Eagles knocked down the first points of the final period with a Gracie Gortmaker three pointer that got Cornerstone up 42-30.

    • Jaxi Long got her 13th point of night as Cornerstone went ahead to a 13-point lead 44-31.

    • The three pointer by Maddie Schuur kept Cornerstone up with under five minutes to play 51-40 over the Saints.

    • Another jumper for Jaxi Long fell as Cornerstone remained on top by 11 points 55-44.

    • Julie Ashbaugh would get the final point for Cornerstone of the night with a good free throw to drive the hard-fought win home 56-49 over the Aquinas Saints.

By the Numbers 

19/7 – Jaxi Long led the way once again for Cornerstone with 19 total points and seven rebounds. Additionally, she shot 50% from the field in the win over AQ.

12 – Gracie Gortmaker added her own offensive performance with 12 points to her name.

11/9 – Julie Ashbaugh had 11 points on the night with nine rebounds to help round out Cornerstone's defensive prowess in their win over Aquinas.

11/8/100% – Laura Innerebner shot 100% from three, going 3-3 from beyond the arch. She put up 11 total points with eight rebounds on the night.
